New* Subforums for each game mode!
« on: January 06, 2017, 11:16:12 pm »
Hey there,

I am sure that you have noticed a bit of a change in the forum. We have separated the game content and given each mainly supported game a page of their own. I hope you will like the change, if not well, the main reason we are doing this is because we cannot possibly have all the boards and games we are planning on opening and are under development to be in one page, it gets too crowded. Main things are still going to be in the forum which you can access any time by clicking the home icon at the top next to the other game buttons.

This is a change on expansion and this is going to be the first bigger thing in 2017. We are still working on it as there is lots to do to smooth it out, make it look good/better and understanding what categories/boards we want to do in each game page. IT is a new thing so we are still wondering what we can do and how things will work out. Also there is room for new ideas and the way we are doing things, like admin applications, unban requests. Should we move each to corresponding game mode or keep it in the main forum page. These are the type of questions we are asking and wondering, but we will see.

Most importantly if you have ideas and other things please post them here as it is pretty new for us and only together we can make it the most user friendly and awesome as it should be.

(Credits to @Red Wolf) Also if you want to add notes on what can you do and how things have changed, please do here Red wolf, like recent unread replies etc.
Kind regards,
Ambrosia Management!

This is better & i like it  :-X

But, can u change so we can access recent topics from any forum without it saying "the board you specified is located on a different forum"
would be better...

too much empty space in the pages because of the page going all the way down from 'staff online' to 'birthdays' on the right and not enough boards to match them
dont think you need all those in each page
a fine job otherwise

i also agree with that. "Recent topics" should be shown for all sections, not separated.

but overall, good idea to separate the different sections.
keep on management, good work

Yeah, due to the new mod, there are some incompatibilities with other functions, but most likely will be fixed.
Since its a new thing, and it was tested locally, now that its open to the public, more bugs occur, and we will try to fix them.
Post here any bug you encounter.

dont add the menu buttons up top, put them under server list  way better.

i find it pointless tho, add each game board as a child board on the game board so you'll have less boards, pointless to create new forum for each one of them

Exactly my thoughts. The forum is a pain in the ass to use how it is right now.

You can also leave them how they were in the past. We can collapse them easily that way and it only takes a few clicks. And you can even install/create a package that would make the categories of your choice collapsed by default so people wouldn't have to check every single category while browsing the forum index page.

Well, this is made to simplify the forum experience for other people, those who want to deal only with what they are interested in. This is ofc a MASSIVE change (visual and code wise), and it will take some time for me to fix some bugs, customize, and for users to get used to it. As it is now, Id say its a pain in the ass switching from one subforum to another just to check recent unread topics, but I hope im going to find a solution to that (thats my main priority atm).

Maybe it doesnt look the best now, but I believe that in a few weeks it will be much better than it is right now, making it a whole new experience. (And ofc if it turns out to be successful)

i disagree with the designs of the sub-menu, now forums has 3 menus which is bad, these things can be done in a simple way and really nice way aswell... but im not saying its a bad idea its a good idea but can be made much better and more simple.

as we said still in progresse its just that we wanted to make it public now so if there is any problem people would be able to suggest or report stuff. So its not finished its a beta start.

I concur, this is not simplifying anything. Actually it makes it more confusing for people that each part has their own forums, creating confusion regarding whether it is standalone or integrated forum.
If you wanted to extend boards for specific games, sub-boards not only would make it less confusing, but also would make them more active.

I guarantee you 99%^of these boards will end up unused.
a) because switcihing between 4 (essentially 5 if acknowledging the main forum) is too much of a hassle
b) the forum is oversatured with boards
c) the sub-forums are not  visually represented well enough or intuitive enough for users to explore these sub-forums
d) Just... why?

All in all i feel like this is a bit of overthinking. There are currently not enough members to fill these boards nor is it visually, psychologically and all in all pleasing to use 4 subofrums inside of 1 forum which already is full of dead sub-boards.

EDIT/PS: Also from designer standpoint, please change the font - ideally implement a new typekit for the buttons and add a proper transition border around them. They look a bit out of place right now and the font doesn't fit the style you were going for.

Currently no, it is not simplifying anything, of course not. I personally do not like the hassle either, so we are opt to make a change and probably look into a different style to accommodation the idea and be more user friendly and practicable at the same time.

About it's usefulness and dead boards, if we remove boards, there will be people requesting them back one way or another. Usefulness is to do with integration and expanding to different games with a more serious focus and approach. It will grow to be better. So from all what you said I only agree on the confusion it makes and that the subforums are not yet designed properly, which again is on to do list. The rest of what you said is complete nonsense and irrelevant to our goals. Also bigger picture please. We aim for each games audience to have a place of their own and if they get interested in other things we support then great, but again a lot of people are interested in only Minecraft and nothing else, so why should it all be under one big page? It's nonsense to even think that everything under one page can be done. Before it worked, it won't work in future therefore we are doing changes now.

Category: gaming
Board: League of Legends > subboards: admin applications, unban etc.
Board: Cs 1.6 >  subboards: admin applications, unban etc.
Board: CSGO >  subboards: admin applications, unban etc.

If you want to visit the CSGO board or "forum" you'll see "https://www.ambrosia-servers.com/community/index.php?board=74.0" a page similar to this, and it is pretty much exactly the same as what you're trying to achieve right now.

If you wanted it to look visually appealing, you can hide the sub-board links on the index and then simply place an image the right size with html in the board title or description. User clicks CSGO they are redirected to the CSGO board which has all the sub-boards in it.

ps: try the prettyurls mod, it's neato :)

sorry if i sound like a twatknowitall :(

pss: my last and final edit. If you do end up going with this new look/style then just an idea, why not create a "news and updates" board for the game and create a RSS bot which will post in the board whenever the game is updated/news etc.

Yep, I find the switch between each subforums and then back to the main forum pretty painful currently. I'm really not a fan and honestly, I like having an overview of the whole forum at once so I know what is active and what isn't and I can read what interests me.
