Case #9 - The Shadows(Hard Case)
Plot: London, 1912. The streets are dark and quiet. Every few nights a dead body is found. Help the police find the murderer hiding in the shadows. Experience chases and mystery like you've never done before!

Quote
London, 1912, 11PM.
It was a dark night, when Lisa was returning home. She was a dancer, and the performance at the club had just ended. It was chilly, there was noone around, when she heard a noise, coming from a dark alley behind her. It shook her for a moment, but she thought it was a cat and kept walking, a little faster this time. She turned right on the next crossroad when she saw someone in front of her, wearing black clothes and having their face hidden with a scarf.
-Hello, Lisa.
He/She took out a knife and slit her throat. She fell on the ground, tried to crawl and ask for help, but no voice could come out of her mouth. The last thing she saw was the killer, walking away.
Not long after, the police arrived.
-Alright officers, let's put some barriers around before the media arrive.
-Lisa Budd, 29, dancer at the "Baxton Club", the killer slit her throat and then ran away. No eye witnesses, no struggle, nothing. We have informed the scanning division to check for fingerprints but that..
-...will take some days.
-Indeed, Captain, said detective Gal.
-Lisa? I knew this chick, good dancer. Damn, what a shame, a young girl, said detective Rollins.
They checked the crime scene for any other clues. Dt.Haze was the 3rd detective, the most experienced one. He was on the force for many years and even had medical experience. He checked the victim's throat.
-The cut is not really deep, but it killed her within minutes. The killer knew exactly where to hit, he's probably very experienced, Captain.
-You think so, Haze? well, you're the most experienced detective here, Ronald, so this is going to be your case. The detectives and officers will help you out, but I want you in charge of it.
While checking the floor around the victim, they found some mud at the direction that the killer possibly left, so it could be from the killer's shoes. There were, however, no further clues to be found.
Back in the precinct, officer Doson paid a visit to dt.Haze's office.
-Hey, dt.Haze.
-You don't have to call me like that when noone's around, Nick. What's up?
-Wanna go to the Baxton tonight? Have a drink, and.. maybe we could even find a clue or something on the case.
-Yeah sure, "find a clue on the case", as if I don't know you! Fine, we'll go, as long as you promise not to drink too much tonight.
The killer was in his appartment, cleaning his tools, checking his list before hitting the next victim. There was classical music playing in the back.
-Time to clean up the city.
Detective Ronald Haze and officer Nick Doson went to the Baxton Club. It had a nice atmosphere and some rythmic songs with young ladies dancing on the stage, putting up a great performance. The place were mostly filled with men of every kind, politicians, civilians, officers, even dt.Jack Rollins was there.
-Rollins?
-Hey, Haze. Like the performance? I mean, not nearly as good without Lisa, but still lovely. Damn, I had asked that chick out, she turned me down, but still, this stage feels kinda empty without her.
-Alright, said dt.Haze, just to get rid of him. There was a man sitting by himself in a corner, having a drink.
-Who's that man? asked dt.Haze.
-He's the manager of the place, said off.Doson. He has taken the club over from the previous dude like a month ago, but he was a suspect for drug trafficking in my town before I was transfered here. He probably came here to start over, I will be keeping an eye on him. He's a son of a bitch, he hates this club, he just wants to stay low.
The next day, dt.Haze went in the archives. Officer Barns was there, he was in charge of the archives room.
-Hey, off.Barns, I need the files of Lisa Budd. Need to check everything again, to be sure I didn't miss anything. And turn off the classical music, the Captain's gonna kill you.
-Hmm, Lisa Budd, I know that name. Ah, I also got another file of her I believe. Yeah, here it is, she was once charged for stealing some cash off the club's cash desk, that's how I knew I've heard her name before.
-Thank you.
There weren't any further clues to find as the following night came. The streets were again quiet, even more now that there was a killer on the loose. Marty was walking on the pavement, drinking once again, when he started getting dizzy. He fell on the ground, he could barely stay awake and not faint, when he saw a dark figure in front of him.
-Here, let me give you a hand, Marty. Then that figure stabbed him on the abdomen. Marty grabbed the killer's hand to stop him, but the killer managed to pull the knife out and stab him again. Seconds later, Marty stopped breathing. He dragged his body in a dark alley. 2 days later, someone found the body and called the police.
-Marty Goodwill, 37, a no-lifer, no family, no job, we don't even know if he has an appartment, always wondering on the streets, drinking.. I remember he was in jail for a few weeks after trying to steal some beers from a shop. He was stabbed, same MO(method of operation),the knife pierced his liver.
Reporters were all around the area. It was now official, there was a serial killer in London. The Chief of police arrived at the crime scene.
-What's going on, here? Another murder? Don't tell me it was the same killer.
-Yes.. it was, said the Captain, disappointed.
-The media is all over us, people are scared, I am counting on you Captain and your detectives to solve this case as quickly as possible. Put some men on the streets, I don't want any area to be empty at night. Stop letting every scumbag roam around our areas. It's time to clean up the city!
-Yes sir, right away.
In the meantime, while dt.Haze was checking the body, he found a piece of blade on the floor underneath it.
-Hmm, look at that, Coroner. You said that judging from the angles of the wounds, the victim resisted.
-So looks like the killer's weapon broke. Good job, detective. I doubt we'll find any prints, though, just like before.
Back at the police station, they checked the piece of blade for any DNA, but it was negative. Dt.Haze was heading to the evidence room, in the archives section to store it, when he saw dt.Rollins.
-Hey, where ya heading?
-Evidence room, putting the blade, said dt.Haze.
-I'm heading there as well, give it to me and I'll hand it over to Barns.
-Alright, thanks.
Another night came, and detective Haze was leaving the police station along with his friend, officer Doson. The streets were being watched by police officers. It was another cold, dark night. Dt.Haze and off.Doson were walking when they saw officers Lohan and Disher on the crossroad, keeping an eye open as ordered. They greeted them and kept walking.
-Disher, I gotta go pee, man.
-Again? I told you too much water aint good for your health, dude. Alright, go.
Off.Lohan went to a dark corner nearby and peed. Few seconds later,  he walked back to the crossroad, but Off.Disher was gone.
-Disher? Disher? He looked around, he saw a trashcan next to the building on his right, there was something on the ground, behind it. He went closer and he saw off.Disher, he was stabbed twice in the back, he was dead. Lohan froze to death. He looked around for help, dt.Haze and off.Doson has walked by minutes ago, when he saw a dark figure walking about a block away.
-Hey you, hold!
The figure started running, it was the killer. Haze and Doson heard the shouting and saw the killer running as well, so they also ran after him. The killer was fast, but he had 3 people running after him. The officers stopped and tried to shoot the killer, but they missed. It was too dark and dt.Haze was also right behind the killer. The killer took a left turn, Haze followed him and as soon as he turned the killer was waiting for him and punched him in the face. Haze fell down but soon got back up. The killer tried to stab him but Haze grabbed his/her hand, puched back and hit the killer on the stomach. The officers were approaching as well, so the killer ran away. They kept chasing him till he took another left turn into a dark alley shortly after. They followed him to the alley, it was a dead end. The killer was gone.
Back at the station, everyone was frustrated.
-Another victim, GOD DAMNIT!!! Dt.Haze was furious.
-No clues anywhere around the body, once again we're on square one, said off.Doson.
-Well, not exactly, said dt.Gal. Like you guys said, the killer escaped through a dead end. So he knew it was there, he knows these streets. Plus, all the murders took place around this area. The killer either lives around here, or has a job that requires this knowledge? Plus he might have some medical experience, so maybe a first responder? An ambulance medic? We can look into it.
-You're right, admitted dt.Haze. And we also got the broken blade we found, if we compare to our local hospital's equipments and find it matches..
-The blade is gone. It was stolen from the evidence room today or yesterday, said off.Barns.
-What? Who has access to it?
-Only me, you and the Captain, Chief. But it doesn't matter, they broke the glass, put their hand through and unlocked it from the inside. Anyway, I don't know much about doctor stuff but I did check the blade out and I doubt it matches our hospital's equipment. It's not local.
-Captain, this is on you and your team. Do whatever it takes, I don't wanna hear that another person has been killed.
-Yes, Chief. Barns, search the archives, I remember Lohan has a file, doesn't he? He had a fight in a bar while drunk a few years back?
-Yeah, that's right, sir.
-We need to look carefully, might find anything in there.
While off.Barns was checking the archives, a nearby office phone rang. He answered it.
-Hello, is this the police? The voice calling was distorted. The person was trying to change their voice.
-Yes, this is officer Barns, who is this?
-Officer Barns? Oh... I know who the killer is. I was returning home from work and I saw him when he attacked Lisa.
-How about we meet somewhere outside?
-Sure, meet me outside the Baxton Club in an hour.
The next morning, someone called the police. Off.Barns was found near the Baxton Club. He was shot 2 times on the chest.
Dts Haze and Gal were once again at the crime scene along with officers Doson, Bricks and Rose.
-He had finished his shift, probably going home, but why isn't he carrying his gu n? asked dt.Haze.
-I believe I saw it on his desk, he probably forgot it, said dt.Gal. He must be the only victim with no criminal record.
-Whatever, as if the previous files gave us any help.
Few hours later, a man was brought it. Dt.Rollins with off.Bricks had arrested him.
-He's the guy, dt.Haze.
-Why are you so sure, Rollins?
-Ask him, he's in the interrogation room.
Shortly after:
-Who are you?
-Ray Trace, 45, former first responder, I live in Basildon, east of London. I came to London to visit an old friend, Marty. There were cops guarding his appartment, I asked why, they said he was killed and there is an open investigation. Then they brought me here to ask me some questions.
-How long did you know Marty?
-About 10 years. We had a big fight months ago and I still had a grudge against him, but I heard he was drinking again at a Raxton Club or whatever and I had to come see how he is.
-Do you still have any of your medic equipment?
-I gave them away to your general hospital about... a year ago, they asked for them, they claimed they needed them for the surgeries, and I didn't care about them so... They were kinda old and rusty though, I suppose most of them are broken and thrown away by now. I don't understand, why am I even here? I lost a friend for god's sake!
-I am very sorry, sir, but we may need some more of your time later on, so we'd appreciate if you stayed with us a little longer. Is that.. mud under your shoe?
-Yeah, although London's a city, with so much rain there will be some mud every now and then. Is that a crime?
-No, not at all.
Dt.Haze left the room. Officer Doson and dt.Gal were waiting for him outside.
-So what do you think?
-I don't know, we should definitely check him out, but I don't know for sure.

That is all you need. Read the case very carefully, find material evidence and be sure of your theory, not everything is simply common sense and suspicions. Who is the killer and why? Good luck.

Rollins is the killer he is working  for the manager of the bar.
1. we see him in the bar alone.
2. he knows about everything that is happening inside which let him do whatever he wants and he stole the blade.
3. he have info about every1 who fucked with the bar before 3 of the dead were killed because of doing something to the bar.
4. he killed off.barns is because he knew that he was about to get exposed he called in the phone
and changed his voice to keep his identity hidden and killed him using his gun.
more evidence points at him but im too lazy to write it down.

Edit :  more shit i wanted to say
5. "The killer was in his appartment, cleaning his tools, checking his list before hitting the next victim. There was classical music playing in the back." we get a lot of 2 evidence from this
   - the obv one is the classical music since barns listen to classical music
   - the more important one is "checking his list before hitting the next victim" that lead us to know that he has a list of people he want to kill.
6. he cleaned the evidence from the blade earlier.
7. ray tracer has nothing to do with it Dt.Rollins wanted to lead the dts the wrong way also making him step on mud in a way so he doesnt notice (to give false evidence)

You're way off the track. The case has not been solved, and there isn't almost any material evidence provided.

weird I still think rollins is the bad guy here.

"they checked the piece of blade for any DNA, but it was negative"
what do you mean by negative? like the murdered DNA or no DNA's were found?
if  its the latter then haze could of planted it near the body when every1 was distracted
there might be more than one killer.

I litterally was thinking the same.

I noticed some weird things maybe can lead someone to an answer.

Dt. Gal at some point aftee off barn's death said he was the only victime without a criminal record. But dt. Disher was dead already, and no crime was mentionned abt disher. Could it be that gal knows a secret crime Disher commited thats why he killed him??

At some point as well dt.gal mentions that off barns forgot his gun on his desk while leaving. He could have taken advantage of this.

Moreover Dt.gal knows everything abt the victims litterally everything. And the criminal is shown to know a lotnabt the victims as well ( "here let me give u a hand marty" or " hello ,Lisa") very suspicious in my opinion)

Oh and dt.Gal wasnt present when dt haze and off doson met disher and lohan , so he could have killed disher.

On the other hand i believe ray is kinda innocent  since he barerly knew the name of thr baxton club calling it "Raxton oor somth" and he lives in east of london. He cant possibly know the alleys of london very well like dt.Gal mentionned:"killer escaped through a dead end. So he knew it was there, he knows these streets. Plus, all the murders took place around this area. The killer either lives around here, or has a job that requires this knowledge?"

hmm intersting I think the killer killed the wrong guy there the target was lohan probably and since gal said that I would say that gal might be the killer and he confused between the two guys.

Okay just thought of something i think the manager of the baxton is innocent in this case since its mentionned that he hates the club but he wanted to stay low. Why would he:
1st kill anyone? If by killing anyone he is staying low i got osme doubts in his IQ level.
2nd amine mentionned that almost everyone who was killed had some sort of fight with the bar. That doesnt lead any evidennce against him as killer since he hates the bar.

I say for this hard case lets eliminate some suspects we are sure are innocent. Till now Ray is innocent( at least in my eyes) and the manager of the braxton.

Oh and i found another thing that leads to Gal :" Let's clean up the city"
Like , Gal knows the criminals of the city or should i say ppl who have a criminal record such as lisa (stealing) Marty  ( stealing) Disher( unknown if he has a crime check my last reply for him). But off Barns as Gal said is the only one without. A criminal record..

Hmmm i must say its a pretty hard one Andrew im litterally brainfucked.

Clean up the city was said twice I didnt wanna mention it cuz I thought it is just a coincidence
the first was by the killer and 2nd by gal
gal seem suspicious to me

for innocent people we can assume every1 around the death of disher is innocent
Haze etc.. but thats saying there is only one killer

Firstly I wanna say your efforts are great. Secondly, I made it confusing on purpose, however, there are a couple of clues that combined with some thinking reveal some spots. For example: the killer knew the victims, someone got in the evidence room and stole the blade, so the fact that it was stolen AFTER it got put in the evidence room already makes 2 people innocent. Small details here and there do reveal some things, check the MO of all the deaths, it's different.

I cannot help any further, I've already said too much. I actually want you guys to fail :D Good luck though.

Okay we know that lohan had a fight with the bar while drunk few years earlier. But he wasnt killed. I believe Gal assumed that Barns is the first victim without a criminal record ignoring disher cz maybe he knew the "killer" accidently killed disher instead of lohan. Since he stabbed him in the back and it was night its hard to recognize ppl from the back.

As for the method of operation, lisa throat cut killed in the dark alley.  Marty in the dark alley abdomen/liver killed stabbed 2 times. Disher  was killed in the crossroad ( so basically diff MO) stabbed in the back twice. Barns was SHOT twice in front of the Baxton again diff MO as well.

As andrew mentionned the killer knew all of his victims. Gal as well. Tbh all the Evidences leads to Gal in my opinion and his motif is "clean up the city" since it was said once by the killer and once by Gal. But i still dont understand why did he kill barns? Maybe cz if he found lohan's archives it would have revealed something?  Hmmm Amine some help would be apreciated.

I wanna make something clear, it is right in front of you(Gal says it) so don't question it: Barns was the only one with no criminal record in the files. No matter what Disher or anyone else did, no matter whether mentioned or not, this is a fact.

Ninja, your theory about Gal killing the wrong victim is flawed. The killer did not wait for Lohan to return after killing the wrong person, walked away, Lohan chased him, so the killer did realise Lohan was still alive yet later on Barns was killed So no, Lohan was most likely not a target.

Last but not least, MO is method of operation, not place of operation, so the crossroad doesn't matter at all. Pay attention to the details. You did find the shooting being a different MO, though.

Just to help you move forward.  I'll probably not be posting any further, only later on to set the deadline.

Okay so basically what u saying is that Disher did have a criminal record. Since barn is the only one without it so the motif of Gal is to kill people who had criminal records. But Barn was about to search the archives. Gal probably knew abt it and knew that if he searched the archives he would have found a clue. So he hoaxed him to his death. Starting to come along.

The MO's are : the first 2 killed people were killed using the same MO since they are civilians maybe? But since Marty before dying kinda tried to resist the killer and broke the blade. So he decided to change the method for not leaving any evidence by backstabbing his victim. But since he almost got caught with it he decided to shoot maybe? But i dont know where this will lead.
The blade was stolen, so if the killer wasnt within the office how would the killer have known where the blade is put? And since all the evidences with disher's death leads to the innocence of lohan, doson and haze. People who are left are Gal, Rollins and bricks. Bricks is barerly mentionned in the case.  Rollins and Gal left.

UPDATE:

Just noticed something. While barns was looking for the archives of lohan knowing that he had a fight with the bar, the killer would have thought that if they find a criminal record on lohan they might heavy guard lohan thinking he is the next victim which would have made things a lot harder for the killer. So basically he killed Off.Barns.

Back to the MO. All 3 people with "criminal records" were killed using a knife. While Off barns was shot using a gun. The gun means that officer barns was probably armed unlike what Dt.haze said cz you know "bringing a knife to a gun fight" is kinda like suicide. So basically the killer probably knew that barns had a gun so he had to  use Barn's gun to kill him  he probably stole it in some way and killed him with it. And kept the gun to make it appear as if he was unarmed. Which leads us to Gal claiming to see barn's gun on the desk a fake claim.
Now in order for barns to let his guard down he must have seen somthing familiar, Someone he kinda trust aka Dt.Gal.

Back to Disher and Lohan. Andrew said that if the killer was targetting lohan in the first place his next victim would've been lohan. BUT as stated before if barns found the archives of lohan, Lohan may have been on heavy guarding. So thats why he had to Stop them searching the archives. And what better way than to kill the one in charge of the archives.

I think it's starting to come along.

Okay i'll try to solve this in the following:

We know that:
- The killer is someonen within the office( since only the officers/detectives knew where the blade was before it was stolen.)
-Since doson lohan and haze were there when disher was killed makes them innocent
-Barns is the only victim without a criminal record which leads us to either one of these ; disher has commited a secret crime only the killer and Gal knows abt or the real target Was lohan (since he had a fight with the bar when he was drunk)
-Barns was killed when he was about to search lohan's archives  which leads us to think that the real target was lohan but barns had the priority of death.
-Dt.Gal knows a little too much about the victims. Same as the killer
-Barns was killed using a gun. (Diff MO than the others). Dt.Haze mentionned he was unnarmed. So the killer might have stolen his gun and killed him. But a gun isnt that easy to steal. So Barns most probably saw a "trusted" face to let his guard down.

My theory is:
Dt.Gal wants to "clean up the city" by assassinating the people with criminal records towards the bar.
What he did was first killing the easy targets first and the harder the target was to kill ,the different the MO would be  . Lisa a woman, marty a drunkyard. Then moved on to the harder targets. Off.lohan but he couldnt kill him because of the dark night and he saw him.only from behind( disher was  stabbed in the back) thats why when lohan returned after peeing he saw the killer who was confused as fuck. Then ran after him. Since he couldnt kill lohan, he needed to kill him next. But Gal knew barns was abt to see lohan's archives. If they discovered somthing critical it would've revealed the killer's ID. So he gave priority to killing Barns. Thats why Gal mentionned barns as the only one without a criminal record.
All evidences leads to Gal since he knows a little bit too much abt the criminals. If it wasnt him how would he have known that barns is the only one without a crime? Since disher wasnt mentionned as criminal unlike lohan....

Andrew since this is a hard case dont tell me it is not solved if i only.missed few more evidences abt gal. Like cmon i bet you dont even have the answer to this one.

Alright let me answer you on that, Ninja. I make the cases and I am the only judge to whether they have been solved or not. And you just lost your "bet", Gal is not the killer.

The deadline has passed, topic locked.

Weeks had passed, the case was getting "cold", it would be archived sooner or later. Dt.Haze kept spending hours and losing sleep trying to crack the case open before it is too late by law, when it hit him.
-Wa..wait a second. Barns was the only one without a criminal record, correct? asked Dt.Haze.
-Correct, said Off.Doson.
-And the only one who got shot and not stabbed, yes?
-Indeed, replied Dt.Gal.
-Barns had access to the evidence room -which someone had broken in- and the archives, so he knew all the victims. AND he also mentioned he does know a thing or two about medical stuff and had tools.
-...hooly crap, both Doson and Gal said at the exact same time..
-But, still, Gal continued, it doesn't answer everything. Why did he break the door of the evidence room if he had keys? Why did someone call him and say they saw the killer, and why would Barns not take his gun? So many questions..
-Alright, after weeks of thinking, I have a theory. What if.. Barns, being in the force, was obsessed with cleaning the city up, and took matter on his own hands? Started butchering everyone with a criminal record.. he wouldn't use the key to the evidence room because he would be a suspect along with anyone else with a key. AND he didn't take his gun because it's registered on his name, another reason he wouldn't want it revealed he's a suspect! He got called from someone who supposedly knew the killer, so he went there to shut them up.
-But who killed him then?
-No idea... maybe someone found out?
Rollins interrupted them.
-Lisa, remember? The club was closing, all the dancers were returning home, someone must've had seen the killer's face, one of the girls. Their boss has a gun, doesn't he? How hard would it be for a woman to use her charm and get in his office? Too easy I'd say..
Dt.Haze was disappointed to say the least.
-So all this time, right under our noses, god damnit. And we will never learn everything we need, he's gone.
-Well, at least it's finally over. I doubt it'll be hard to get some prints from the manager's safe at Baxton, we arrest the girl and put the case to an end.

Case #9 Solved by London PD. Credits go to Ninja Assassin and Amine for their tremendous effort and abilities, the case would've never been solved without their help.

More cases to come.
