Going throught the story from top to bottom, I will leave comments in each section. At the end, in green, will be my conclusion or questions.
-Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to New York's Central Theater. Hello to our thousands of people in the audience and the millions watching from TV.
Tonight, we have David Blaine with us, one of the biggest magicians in the world, and he's gonna show us one of his top classic tricks. He will get inside this box, his beautiful assistant will close it,
she will open it again a few seconds later and he'll be gone! She will repeat the process, and soon after David will be back with us!.
Everyone was excited, families, elderly, children, watching with their mouths open as the magician enters the box. His assistant closes it..
-And now, open it Marissa, and let's see what happened to Mr.Blaine!
She smiles, opens the box, but what she sees makes her scream. It was the magician, he had not disappeared, he was there, stabbed with a knife to his chest.
Murder weapon: knife
COD: knife to the chest
-Oh my god, said the presenter. Is there any doctor here? We need help!
Everyone was scared, people were in agony and many of them running out of the theater. A man from the audience ran to the stage.
-I'm a doctor.
He examined the body, checked him for any pulse.
-He... he's dead.
It was not much later when the police arrived. The locked down the crime scene and checked for clues. There were no prints on the knife or anywhere else, but there was some kind of powder on the knife. There were no signs of struggle either.
Powder? Wonder what that is, maybe it has something to do with the killer. Some latex gloves have powder inside them so the hand is not slippery and the gloves don't simply come off. Could that be it?
-Hello officers. I am Brock Chanders, the director of the theater. I was at home when this happened, watching the show, and I saw... this is so sad, I mean David was.. if there's anything I can do to help you guys..
Was he alone at home? Can someone verify his alleby?
-Thank you mr.Chanders. What we were wondering is what is that powder on the knife.
-Hmm, let me see... Oh, it's magic powder, it's David's, he has it in his dressing room. Only he has the keys for it. He has his magic secrets in there as well, wouldn't want anyone getting in that room of course!
Oh so that's where the powder came from. We need to check for forced entry in the magician's room.
-Interesting. They check the dressing room and the door, nothing to show the door was breached, but no signs of the keys either.
Killer had the keys with him then.
-Of course, whatever you want.
-First of all, we wanna see the trick. The whole trick.
They headed downstairs, where a door stopped them.
-Does this door lead under the stage? Who has access to it?
-Only me and Mr.Filtch, and old man, he's like a safekeeper, stays under the stage most of the time to make sure everything works alright and there's no tresspasing.
We're the only ones with a key, so noone can come and see anything they're not supposed to.
-And where is Mr.Filtch now?
-He must be around here somewhere. Quite weird though that he's not down here. I'll get someone to find him.
Suspicious old man, isn't he?
-Great. Now how about you unlock the door and show us?
-Yeah, sure.
They opened the door, there was not much to see really, the floor was quite sandy, there were a few lights but it was quite dark. Some sacks for some other tricks, and a couple of chairs.
-Here's where Mr.Filtch usually sits. And here's where the trick is performed. Up there on the ceiling, as you can see, is a hatch.
That's where the magician stands. The box is put on top of it of course, Marissa closes the box, Mr.Filtch opens the hatch and David falls on these sand sacks, safe and sound. He uses the ladder, goes back up, Mr.Filtch pulls the lever again and the hatch closes. I haven't been down here for weeks, so I guess that's still how it works, haha.
Now, judging from how the trick works, it wasn't possible for the magician to go down and get killed down there. He must have been killed while he was in the box. Because, if its a ladder that the magician uses to climb up, it would have been hard and tedious to carry a dead body up the ladder. Plus, there wasn't much time after all (at the top of script, it says that a few seconds later the box would be opened). So right now, I am thinking that the magician was killed while he was in the box and the hatch was never opened.
-What about the rest of the crew? Any chance they'd be able to get down here?
-No way, there's a few of them as we wanna keep it small but they work over the stage, with the lighting, the scenes.. you know.. most of the times they don't even get to see Mr.Filtch.
They investigated the crime scene from under the stage. They checked the ladder for any prints, but found nothing.
-Strange. They kept looking around, found some big rings nearby, some rope, basic magic-making tools.
-The "biggest magicians" in the world. Gimme some of those tools and I can rock the stage as well, said one of the officers.
-Thank god he's dead and can't hear your lame jokes, Johnson.
They kept looking for anything they missed, and they saw a sign on the floor's sand, next to the ladder. It looked live a shield surrounded by leaves.
-Take a picture of that in case it gets stepped on.
-This? Seriously? This can be a cat that came down here to poop, this isn't a clue..
-Just do it already.
Few minutes later, the police was questioning the assistant, Marissa Fleming.
-I am so sad about David. He was so clever and his magic was... I still cannot believe this.. Me and David were.. involved, for months, but lately it wasn't going very well,
I wanted to break up with him, he didn't like that, we had some fights... but I would never want something like that to happen to anyone... oh god, who, why, how...
Could she have killed him? Need more clues to be sure. Could he have killed himself? Need more clues as well.
I am simply typing what is coming to my head right now for future reference.
-Why did you want to break up with him? Was there a specific reason?
-Well, I tried a lot to keep this relationship, but we just.. don't match. We tried again last night, I was at his house, we slept together, but I.. I am in love with Brock.
-Brock Chanders?
-Yeah, I've worked with Brock and David for a long time, I just.. fell in love..
Brock the manager. Damn son!
Later on, the police questioned Mr.Filtch.
-Bloody scammers, stealing people's money with cheap tricks, that's who they are.
-Calm down Mr.Filtch, and tell us what happened.
-I have been doing this for a very long time. Helping Blaine and his fame from down here. Pulling levers, checking stages, repairing broken tools, I've almost become a magician myself. But all I get at the end of the day is this dark hole under the stage. And them? They get money, fame, and for what? For scamming some poor teens that love those kind of tricks.
He seems angry. Could he had enough and decided to kill the magician?
-Did that make you upset Mr.Filtch? Did you want revenge?
-You're asking me if I'd like them to be in my place? Hell yeah. But murder someone? No..
-Really? Then how is it possible that Blaine died while you were managing the lever?
-Lever? What lever? I was home today, I called in sick couple of hours the show started.
-Is that so? Can anyone confirm this? Was there anyone with you?
-Listen here, boy, said Mr.Filtch to one of the officers questioning him. I may be a lot of things, but I aint no killer. Now get the hell out of my stage! This is all I got! Plus, I lost my damn keys for the stage, I don't know what the hell..
-Quite convenient.
So I get it we can't know for sure whether filtch was at home or not. Lost his keys? What a coincedence.
Later in Mr.Chanders's office.
-Let me show you a small trick, gentlemen. Look at this little bird on my hand. Beautiful, isn't it? This is the first act of a magic trick, showing the audience what the trick is about. Now watch closely. He covered the bird with his other hand, and when he removed it, it was gone.
Now this, officers, is the second act, the transition. The bird disappears, you wonder where it went, but you won't find out, cause you were not careful enough. The third act, and most important, is the return, where you get the act back to the start, bringing the bird back. He covered his hand again, and when he took it away, the bird was back.
-The bird returns, and everyone is happy, clapping, because the bird is back on my hands. Without the third act, magic would be nothing. This is the first thing David taught me. I don't know much, but everything I know is from David. We were friends for a long time, I would be a nothing without him, but he saved my job, saved the theater, saved my life.. and he will continue to save me, for many, many years. You know why he taught me this trick? Because the audience does not care about the bird that disappears, the audience cares about the bird that comes back. People will forget David Blaine, but they will never forget his magic, I won't let that happen.
-Mr.Chanders, as we were coming to your office, we saw a young man talking to Mr.Filtch.
Could those be the two accomplices to the crime?
-Ah, Jimmy, he's one of the lighting crew, young boy, eager to learn. Mr.Filtch is like his mentor, they're always together when there's no show. He loves him.
-Enough to help him with anything Mr.Filtch would ask?
-I suppose... why? What happened?
-Nothing, nothing, just curiosity.
See? Could be that he helped filtch with the murder.
While leaving the office, they saw that young man again, Jimmy.
-Hey, young man, Jimmy, we have a couple of questions.
-I didn't do anything! He started running away.
Dafuc? When people run away from cops, that usually means they did something wrong.
-Hey, hold! They ran after him. He ran upstairs to the catwalk of the stage, it started shaking, it was too weak for people to run on. 3 officers chased him. One of them stepped too hard on the catwalk and it broke. His leg went through it and got injured.
-Aaaah, son of a bitch!
He ran across the catwalk and ran down the stairs to get away from the stage, but 2 other officers were already there.
-Stop right there, young man!
They took him to Mr.Chander's office, to question him:
-Calm down son. Do you know anything about the murder?
-No, I just do the lighting. I saw you speaking to Mr.Filtch, you're not gonna arrest him, right? He's a good man, he's innocent!
MAybe he knows who commited the murder but was threatened not to speak about it to the cops? Or maybe, he was the murderer.
-Why did you run?
-Because I thought you would arrest me... All I hear is people getting arrested and killed by the police.
-That's the media, son, that's what they show, all they care about is publicity, and.. they're doing hell of job on that.
Yeah right. If you did nothing wrong, no one would arrest you. You are innocent until proven guilty, so they cannot simply arrest you cause they suspect you did something.
2 days later, the keys to David Blaine's dressing room were still not found. They broke the door, and searched the room. There was a list of David's "magic" items, and many of them were missing. There was some powder spilled, and some fingerprits on the drawers.
Damn andrew, would it hurt you to read your script before posting it? There are a shitton of spelling mistakes.
Anyway, magic items are missing, I am thinking it could be the theater manager. Because he knows a few magic tricks that the magician taught him, could it be that he wanted to mahic items for himself? Who's fingerprints were those?
-Take a sample, some of them may not be David's.
While leaving the theater, Brock was escorting them.
-Thank you for your work, officers. I really hope you catch the bastard who did this.
-What about you, Brock? How are you gonna entertain the people now that David is gone?
-I've thought about this for a long time, officer. I wanna make my own theater, with my own magic tricks, I've learnt a lot from David, I think I can do it. Plus, I'll have the best assistant in the world, right Marissa?
I FUCKING TOLD YOU! He wants to be a magician himself, so he might have murdered the magician and took his magic items for himself.
Anyway, thank you for your time officers, but I gotta get going as well, gotta get my Cadillac for some service, it's been leaking oil lately.
3 days later, the police were called for an emergency. It was Mr.Filtch's small appartment, 2 blocks away from the theater. He had a knife on his chest, and only his fingerprints were on it.
There was a note next to him "I was greedy, magic was my life. I am sorry".
Suicide note. I don't buy it, I think it was the manager who killed filtch and made it look like a suicide.
Questions time:
1. The fingerprint that was found in the magician's room was for who?
2. Check if the manager really took his car to the service. Ask him for the place where he got it fixed and go ask that place for a confirmation.
3. I am pretty sure that the manager was not home at the time of the murder. No one can confirm his alleby I assume. Correct?
4. We can do hand writing analyses on the note and see if it was filtch who wrote it or the manger. Please do that.
Conclusion: The murderer was the manager. Since filtch called two hours earlier to report that he is sick, the manager must have took this opportunaty to commit the crime. He had access to the underside of the stage so he could have easily committed the murder. He must have killed the magician and took his keys, then later went to the room and took whatever he wanted.
This is my conclusion so far and I am pretty certain that he was the murderer, unless you answer the questions above and introduce new evidence that could change my mind.
