Solution to the "End of Gambling" drama
« on: October 14, 2016, 12:17:15 am »
I'm pretty sure that everyone of us is already aware of what is happening in our community. If not however, I'll try to give you a brief intro. WSGC (Washington State Gambling Commission) has notified Valve so they use all their powers to permanently stop people gambling skins.

I've thought about this with my other friends and we might have found a possible solution to all this. If you think about it, there has to be some kind of solution. There is a "core" to every single successful gambling website. Speaking of which, If we somehow discover and remove this "core" sites will remain unusable. So what is the core? What makes gambling possible? In my opinion Valve should focus a bit more on so-called "automated trading bots". Bots are the ones who make gambling skins possible to this day.

Theoretically speaking, If they were to remove the possibility to deposit/withdraw skins instantly, would it make a difference? Surely! Prohibiting the use of automated bots will make gambling sites broken.

So we had an idea, that Valve could possibly stop this, by adding some kind of "next step" verification. I'm not really sure if it will solve anything, but how about the good old captcha code verification? Could it make any difference?

Indeed, they can disable custom API at any time. However, that's the bottom last solution.  In my opinion it's very unlikely to happen. I also do realise that it won't stop here. As I said earlier in the post. It's simply too big of a business to just let it go from one day to another. People will always search for border-legal solutions how to gamble legally.

If you got any idea/suggestion please let me know in the comments bellow. I'm really curious myself. Hopefully they can somehow solve this issue as soon as possible. In my opinion online betting is simply too big of a business to just "let it go" from one day to another. Valve or goverment can prohibit using skins as form of currency, however they can't stop people from gambling. Who knows? Maybe gambling with real world currency - money will soon become a real thing. What is your opinion?

I dont think steam wants gambling to be over, but is forced to.
They can, however, block the openID for specific sites, but that has a solution, banning bots requires a bit more time and has a solution. And, tbh since government is involved, they can put some effort in closing them, and then take legal measures.

Blocking bots is not a solution, there are many other non-betting sites that use bots, such as opskins, bitskins and any other trading site ever

Even though steam banned gambling, some sites found a way to operate. Some of these are:
Strong (i believe thats how its called) where all it did was create another site where you would depoait skins for points, and then you could either trade (i believe that was limited to trading) or transfer points to other gambling sites.

Another one is Society, they actually moved to bitcoin, they posted several videos and tutorials on how to convert skins into bitcoin.

And about your 2 last sentences, it already has, there are A LOT of gambling sites who accept bitcoin, paypal, credit cards and many more. You can even bet on esports (i believe) or real life sport events, there is roulette, dice, live games and many more.
