Ping Limit
« on: July 26, 2015, 09:16:35 pm »
Probably been mentioned previously but why is the player latency limit set so high? the server holds 30 players and if 50% of them have high latency (which they generally do) It raises the server latency and ruins it for many other players (Mainly those not running high internet speeds)
Is it possible to lower the limit to make it more enjoyable for others? or is it a case of being worried the numbers will drop?

Less than 200?
Most of the player have like 150/170 ping now that server is boosted, so i guess 200 is good...

yes 200 limit is very high in my opinion. Not only do they warp all over the screen but they also soak up bullets. talking from experience when I have a ping of say 30, the second I run next to a player with 150+ latency, I start to lag. not sure if it is the same for anyone else but I know it makes playing difficult for myself.

I would suggest this for dd2 only since it has a high amount of players and there shouldnt be fear of losing its activity, i usually get 50-40 ms but when people with higher ping than 130 join the server raises the latency for all the player by 30 which is kinda irritating and kills the fun as long as you get delays in ur shooting due to ping raise.

imo atleast 150 as highest, 200 is too much

Agreed, It was the DD2 server I was referring to. don't think I mentioned that...my bad.
I still think 150 is too high, you have to take into consideration that potentially 30 players could join with 150 pings.
You cant limit the number of players which can have say 150 ping but you can make the limit lower across the board so even if 30 players joined with say 100 ping, it wouldn't effect everyone else so badly.  :)

Ambrosia servers are for all people over the world so if the ping limit is less than 250 no one can play from outside of europe and it will be harder for middle east and other countries to play.

Ping doesn't matter lag is not from the high ping , it depend on ur net  even sometimes 20/40 ping lags too :3

If we are some years back in 2012, where the minority of people were dutch and Irish players with leftovers of british players from SN, then ping limit would have been 120. So because it's 2015 and the communities where cs 1.6 players can reside have drastically decreased and ambrosia would be foolish to lose players because of a lousy ping limiter.

That's not correct

Without getting too technical about it for the sake of discussion and everybody understanding, basically ping is about packets being sent from point A to point B. I'll do a little illustration below (apologies for my my awful drawing :D)

Basically the way what people understand under as ping, is that you send packet data towards the server and the server returns them and it measures the amount of time (in miliseconds) it takes for this transaction to procceed. Now look at the example below.

Now the premise is simple. In order to carry anything from point A to B, just like in real life there are two main factors.

1) The distance you have to carry
2) The speed at which you can carry
3) Any possible barriers/blockades inbetween

Just like when it comes to ping it is about mainly the distance and speed. So it's not only about quality of his internet, but also the distance it travels. Lag is cause of high packet loss (or high ping in basic terms) and is caused as of bad internet as much as distance between the user and the server.

This is very simplistic explanation, but I hope this helps to avoid a bit of confusion/debate about whether it's good or bad internet or distance. It's both.  All in all, I can't give any real answer, as we try to stay open internationally and not focus on specific ethnic group. We could take it into consideration but honestly it's hard to say whether this would help or hurt. I understand and share your frustration about how annoying it can be if somebody has jittery movement, but at the same time people have servers they have grown to be fond of and it would not be a smart decision to swipe everybody off, even when many has help us built what we have today and are dedicated players for several years. We might consider lowering it, but even if we do, it won't be significant lowering.

CS 1.6 is much smaller than it was in it's prime and nowadays you have to cherrish the players you have, in cs:go it's a bit of different story.

Beanie, if the server is hosted from UK and the player comes from southern Chile for example..... Fair enough for the player with that ping limit.

I'd suggest we keep it as it is, but yeah sometimes it's annoying when playing with someone who has a high ping like 150-170.

If you satisfy the group that has a good net (more than 10mb) the lower than 10mb would get mad about the decission.
If you satisfy the group that has a bad net (less than 10mb) the upper case will get mad. What to do then?

Why are you to play in a community where you are teleporting, ruining everybody's else experience. Not to mention yourself being aware that you can't play with such a ping. Do you join the server to be able to play or make everybody else annoyed. We have a term for that, called laming.

The only good argument is, by halfing the ping kicker, we can half the playerbase but the other half will be satisfied.

the ping limit gotta be lowered, dd2 is turning into shit

i even prefer playing on other servers now, i literally cant hit a single shot in dd2 and there's a teleporter everytime i join it

most of the times only noobs have higher ping than 100-120 those who dont even know what latency means, they just join a server to play, as for most of the good players have lower than 70, therefore, if u keep those players with too much high ping ( the noob players), the ones who should be having a lower one but gets higher instead ( the good players) will leave the server and it will only be holding these people with 120+ latency which make it much worse and basically unplayable.

lowering ping limit might get some players to leave but it can open doors for european players who wana enjoy without getting their game ruined by high pingers.
