The Ultimate Tutorial - Counter Strike 1.6 Dedicated Server! [HLDS & STEAMCMD]

Hello everyone,
This is a guide to make a Counter Strike 1,6 server for OS : Microsoft Windows x
This topic will be updated if needed to.
This topic will show you how to make a Counter Strike 1.6 dedicated server , I will mainly cover the basic steps.
The topic will mainly cover a server without Plugins , the topic WILL be updated on how to add plugins.

This topic will be updated for STEAMCMD.


                                                                                             
 

Recommended :

Hardware/Internet

A Dual Core Processor @ 2.4 GHz
2 GB RAM.
Upload speed of minimum 1mb/s.

Software
Counter Strike 1.6 Steam or Warzone.
HFS


Start Up

Now like I said before, this will not cover plugins and all , but if you do want to add plugins then you're gonna need AMX mod , at amxmodx.org .

First things first , go to you CS 1.6 directory , I personally like to make a whole new copy of it on my desktop.
You need to find .exe called HLDS and launch it , now you will get a new window , with the options :
Game
Server Name
Map
Network
Max Players
UDP Port
Rcon Password


HLDS start up

Select these options :
Game : Counter-Strike
Server Game : Up to you
Map : Up to you
Network : Internet
Max Players : Up to you
UDP Port : Default 27015 , you can change it as you like. RECOMMENDED DEFAULT
RCON Password : Up to you

Now press Start




The Server Configurations

Now your server is running , but you need to configure settings.
Click on Configure.
Now select those settings as you like.
Note : You will have to do that every time you launch your server.

If that seems annoying to you , there is a simple way to fix it.
Go to Cstrike folder in your Server directory and find .cfg called Server.cfg
Open .cfg with notepad or wordpad.
You can now edit that as you like.

I run a Deathrun server to play with friends , and this is what I type in server.cfg

Portforward
You haven't finished making the server , Portforward is required.
NOTE : If you will have less than 5 players then take the easy way and go for Hamachi.
I really cannot help you portforward because each router has a different way of portforwarding.
So the most simple way to do this is go to this website :
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
Select your router.
Select Counter-Strike
Follow the steps.

Fast Download
You need fast DL if you are going to put custom models or different maps.
If you don't put it , maximum speed of download will be 8KB/s , players will leave because of the long download times.
Not to worry!
Download software called HFS
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/
Install it and run it.
Now I don't know the default settings , but I would recommend going to Expert Mode.
Click on port and change it to something suitable , I personally use port 81.
Now you have to portforward this port , so do that. ^
Next thing is do self test to make sure it's working , if it is working then proceed to next step , if it isn't check ports are forwarded properly!
I Personally like to do it every time I run this software.
Okay so now drag your Cstrike folder to your the Tab " Virtual File System "
Now click on cstrike folder.
Now you will get a IP above , make sure it matches your external IP address ( check at IPchicken.com )
Once that is over it should give you link something like this :
http://this.is.the.ip:81/cstrike


Stage 2

Go to your Cstrike folder and look for server.cfg
Open it and type this in
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_allowupload 1
sv_downloadurl "http://this.is.the.ip:81/cstrike"

Now save it.

FastDL should be working , remember to keep HFS on.




Common Issues :

-I have my ports open but my friends still cannot join!?
A- Make sure your ports are opened properly , double check.
  - You might be giving the wrong IP address to your friends , go to IPchicken.com for your external IP address.
  - If none of the above are working then
     

     And make sure if you want to make a dedicated server your firewall must be off or else it wont work ..
     

-My server keeps crashing when I change the map to a certain map.
A- The answer is very simple , the server has failed to load a file from the map , make sure you have all textures and files for the map in your Cstrike.



SteamCMD




If you want your server to be up-to-date with all the latest update Counter-Strike receives then you can use SteamCMD to run your server.
(Note you will have to download Counter Strike in another directory again , don't uninstall the one in your SteamApps folder)

Downloads

First things first , download the launcher :

Installation

Once finished downloading , create a new folder on your desktop or any where in your windows , and extract steamcmd.exe using WinRAR or 7zip.
Launch steamcmd.exe
It will download some files if new update came out.
Now you will have to login your steam account through this steamcmd , to do that you will see the line :
Steam>
After this line type login "yourusername"
                             then it will verify it then you will get a line
Password :
Type  your password after that line.
If you do not trust this software even though it's from official steam , then you can do

Once you're logged in the next step is to download Half-Life.
Note : with this software you can make a server for any game that uses source engine.
To download halflife you will have to type the code after the "Steam>"

app_update 90 validate  And it will start downloading.
Now this is a download bug that it sometimes never downloads properly , the progress SHOULD end at 100.0% , if that does not happen then you will have to type the code again until you get it right.
Note : The image given for an idea of how it should look like is stole, I was having a bad day!


Once you have done that , look in the folder you have extracted steamcmd.exe.
You will see many folders.
Direct yourself to the following root :
(RED = what you have chosen)
C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\Directoryyouhavechosen\SteamCMD\steamapps\common\Half-Life
                       ^           
You can install AMXMODX for this as well , download the amxmodx from official website , amxmodx.org.
And click install , when you have to choose game directory go to the directory where your server is installed , and make sure select Counter-Strike.


You can now normally start up and edit the server as you like.

Make sure you have forwarded and opened the ports properly.
If you have done that then you might be giving him your LAN IP , which usually starts with 192.168.x.x

This tutorial is invalid - you are supposed to use steamcmd nowadays, not HLDSUpdateTool.
