Hello,

As I seen a lot of people are afraid of "Hackers" and so on..... so this topic will be made just to make you more confidence and remember one thing,

No hacker can hack you if you know what your doing.

So I will start with the most ways people are getting hacked or scammed... :-

* Phishing Scam : a website that got the same temple of a website you know, and it will ask for your account details or ask you to download something which might contain a key logger or a virus.

- What can you do to check weather its a phishing scam or not?

1- Tools :-

- http://www.siteadvisor.com/ , its a McAfee tool which it tells you if the website is safe or not... , it check some certificate when registered and so on ..... and if there was something wrong it will tell you ... like this

- Norton Safe Web http://safeweb.norton.com/ , you just enter the URL and it tells you, its not very accurate because people which really tested the website will be informing the tool so if you got a website and its new it wont know if its good or bad... example try Ambrosia it will say Untested.

2- Your EYES, I use my eyes to check weather the website is safe or not, how? I got Super Man eyes see through it? No...

First check if there is Https, if so then its safe , Example :- https://www.paypal.com/ , you see there is Security Http Protocol and you will see Certificate name next to it Paypal,Inc. |US| .... and check https://store.steampowered.com/login/ you will see it too so if ANYONE give you a steam login page which doesn't have HTTPS , then slap him with a fish, he is scamming you.

* Key Logging: a file that will send informations to email or ftp of the hacker what ever you type or press.

How to check weather this file is keylogger or not?

1- Anti Viruses, its best choice alot of keyloggers are detected by them and I recommend Kaspersky and Norton, don't use AVG even if the file is saying I am keylogger it will say no, your not.

Note: there is some keyloggers which can't be detected so even if you got Anti Virus do the next step.

2- Just don't open files your not sure about.... or from people you don't trust, personally I never receive any file .exe or .bat from any friend even my dad.

Note: Key-loggers are always .exe or .bat or something executable ... , they can't be Images or music or videos ... but some hackers make the icon of the key-logger as a mp3 player and you just click and ka boom, so check the FULL extension, if it was .mp3.exe then its a keylog file, and even if you opened the file and it was like a game, it can be a game binded with keylogger.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
For Steam users :-
1- If someone is asking for any info check his aliases and his screenshots to make sure he is the real one, I know a community got hacked because someone faked head admin and got all passwords from the owner like shaving his ass.
2- Put Steam Gaurd ON, if someone even got the password somehow he can't log in till he get confirmation code from your email so make sure you check your emails if someone trying to get in the steam account so you can change the password and NEVER match the steam account password with the email and use a hidden email that none knows about ;).
3- If you bought a game "CD" in real world, then save the key code steam will ask for it if something happens.
4- Just for confirmation, don't type your info in steam login page that got NO HttpS in it.
Sorry if there is some mistakes, this is not final edition :P, any mistakes please notify me :)
Regards,
Killerftw
Great write-up, very informative :)
Personally I wouldn't touch anything made by Norton.
never used any 3th party software for security and i never will.
got a hardware firewall home and windows security essentials, that is enough for me to keep this all away.
just dont be a dumbass by clicking wrong things.
I do not suggest Mcafee, Sometimes its security is annoying me telling me Runescape is a phishing site lol.
And for virus scanners, Spybot - Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will prety much make you're PC safe lol.
And yeah like you said, If you know you're doing you won't be in trouble..
And i dont really know that much of pc security lol but what im using right now is prety much keeping me save.
And you can also manually detect keyloggers =p
Yeah, I hate it too and AVG, I don't use any but its free and might be helpful some times... , but Norton is very good , you want to know why?
I was going to keylog someone like in Summer time and the keylogger was not detected in ANY antivirus but norton... so that's why I believe in it :P
Glad this would be helpful, I was just pissed from some of my friends just got hacked so simply... and they saying reckoN is a proffesional hacker and so on, I knew how he did it and it was one of these 3 on one of the owners ;) (wont say more).
And you know that reckoN is nothing but a bug, but you guys just made him god-like from your talk.
Depends on what hardware you're running ;)
I wouldn't run a computer without protection (be it hardware or software), sooner or later it's going to get trashed :wacko:
I don't have Anti-Viruses because of the updates annoys me... , and ofcourse it will slow your computer if it was Pentuim 1.
I got Intel i7 Quad core, so I can run 6 Antiviruses doing Scan and I am playing Counterstrike without lagg :P.
its a plain fact, every antivirus program slows down the computer, dosnt matter the type of hardware, it depends on harddisks.
ide harddisks got a speed of 133mbps max, plain slow.
Sata harddisks got a speed of 6gbps (pretty fast but got his slow moments especially while scanning)
SSD harddisks are the fastest, with a raw speed of almost 600mbps max, it wont slow down, however it will degrade very fast, and whilst scanning it will degrade the harddisk even faster and break it down. bye bye 400 euros for a harddrive
best performance = no antivirus
best security = with anti virus.
any questions?
I am sure, even if the hacker putted a label on a virus saying its virus, they will still try it.
And Deniz, if you got SSD with 64mb ram and pentuim 4 , it will be fastest because it got SSD?
No of course, its a cycle Hard disk, CPU and Ram
I disagree... Better the hardware (inclusive of type of hard disk), the less effect on performance. There is a marked difference between HDD and SSD, that is always going to be true. But to say hardware doesnt have an effect, well it's not what i have seen over the years. (i've been building them for 20 years).
But thread is about computer safety :P
just to add my finalword, i used to run servers also, i have hosted a couple of cs servers for another community in the past.
antivirus was giving players on the servers tons of spikes, it wasnt enjoyable. also my memory usage was on 60% of the 8gb of ram.
deleted the antivirus (nod32)
server was better, ftp was 4x faster than before, memory was on 20%, 40% on peak hours.
i also worked for a large company as server manager, they used to have some antivirus programs and that impacted the performance of the servers, and that wasnt just kids toy. talking about servers over of 40,000 euros with 288 proccesors, all dualcores.. and some server models had quadcores and they where ever slower!
yeah, antivirus is totally crap for someone like me, best "antivirus"  around for me is just my mind not clicking on things, if you didnt click it then ur safe.
it also limits ur internetspeeds if your using a internet security kit, cuz the program needs to check every byte that it downloads causing more load for ur computer, slower harddisk performance during downloading than without this "internet security program"
just a simple guide from me,
DONT CLICK ANY LINKS THAT INCLUDE FREE GAMES/FREE PORN/FREE MOVIES/FREE MUSIC ON STEAM/SKYPE/MSN/AIM/WHATEVER!
if you did then goodluck with changing passwords.
Best advice! The number of times I have brought computers back from oblivion because of that is untrue :P
*Off topic - we have similar backgrounds Deniz - Used to run a server company etc :)
I wish I can work on servers company, tbh I am only 14 none will accept me even for selling gum.
But Servers are different from our computers, because at least the Server must have HDD 10k RPM or yeah its not server anymore it can't run Mario Server.
