Movie making guide for noobs

So you are about to make your first CS movie. A simple movie can be made in a few minutes, but if you really want to impress your friends, it can take hours, days or even weeks to get that super cool awesome looking bit of video.

So what do you need?

•   Complexity demo player found here http://www.sk-gaming.com/file/13709-Complexity_Demo_Player
•   Fraps (or another screen recorder for games) Trial version here http://www.fraps.com/free/setup.exe
•   Video edit software (I personally use Sony Vegas pro 11)
•   Your awesome demo or demo’s
•   Patience
•   A bit creativity ;)

I know you can also use Virtualdub and TGA files, but it’s time consuming and a waste of diskspace.
This way is cleaner and faster

So now the boring stuff begins and here you can use the patience I mentioned earlier.
Make sure Fraps (or the software of your choosing) is turned on and works

Open the demo with Complexity demo player

If it doesn’t work properly try the following:
Problem: compLexity Demo Player crashes on startup (with no information as to why).
Solution: The .NET Framework 3.0 runtime is required.
Problem: Upon playback, the game launches but nothing happens; the demo doesn't play.
Solution: Go to the Preferences window and set your Steam account folder to whichever Steam account you are currently logged into.
Problem: Old Counter-Strike demos show incorrect player models (i.e. a Terrorist with a CT GIGN model).
Solution: Set cl_minmodels to 1.
Problem: Player shadows appear as a black squares.
Solution: Set cl_shadows to 0.

If everything does work properly, hit the play button in the bottom right corner.

CS will load and play the demo. If you hit the escape button you will get playback controls.
Just go to the parts you want to record make sure you record some time before the action begins and don’t stop to soon after it ends for editting purposes.

This is time consuming and for me the most boring part, but crucial.

Ofcourse you can also record the entire demo with fraps and edit out the parts you want later, but remember that fraps saves the video uncompressed and it will be very very large files.

So now the fun part begins.
At this stage it’s wise to already have an idea on how you want your movie to look like.

Import the files you just created with fraps in your favorite movie making software and let the creativity begin.

To explain how to use Sony Vegas or any other editting software I would probally need about fourty more pages so that’s something you have to do on your own. With windows movie maker you can make pretty awesome videos as a beginner, so I advice you to start with that.

Later, if you have reached the limits of WMM and you can get your hands on Sony Vegas, just use google for some amazing  movie making tutorials.

Good luck have fun and post your results here!
