The Ultimate Tutorial - Making a Vanilla Minecraft Server!
« on: July 17, 2014, 12:32:50 am »
Hello everyone,
This is a guide to make a Vanilla Minecraft server for OS : Microsoft Windows x
I will update this topic as the minecraft releases come out.
This is not made for a bukkit server , there might a different topic for a bukkit server.
Vanilla -> No Plugins
Bukkit -> Fancy ass plugins.

Okay so you want to make a Minecraft server and play with your friends.
This Tutorial will cover :
-Downloading all necessary files.
-Portforwarding.
-Fixes for errors.

Hardware and Softwares Needed :
-Minimum 2GB RAM
-A Dual Core Processor or Higher
-Java
-Text Editing Program
-Dubstep Music.

The Downloads

The first thing you need is to go to the Official Minecraft Website , then you're gonna find the download button.
For those who are lazy or cant find it.
https://minecraft.net/download
(you're welcome.)

Now you look down and find the Topic " Multiplayer Servers ".
Download .exe if you want to make it quicker and live without GUI logs.
Download .jar if you want to use 10 seconds of your life making a new file , but with less errors.

The Extractions

Make a new folder and put the .exe or .jar there and run it , now you may notice that it runs and then quickly closes, and new files are made in that folder.
Now find a .txt named "eula".
Open it , now you will see some crap you don't want to read.
Now find this : eula=false
Change that false to a : eula=true
Now save that .txt.

The Server Properties

Launch the .exe file again.
Now you may notice it doesn't close , and new files are created into the folder.
Now you want to focus on the file named " Server ".
Close the server safely by typing stop in the console
Now open the Server file , and if it tells you to choose a program choose any program which edits text, like Notepad or Wordpad , etc.

Now this is what would be written in the file.

Spoiler (hover to show)

Now you can edit it as you like. , but this is important :
online-mode=true
If you or your friends are using a Cracked Minecraft launcher , then you must change to:
online-mode=false

The Port Forwarding

Now you're thinking "My server is up and running , ill just give the IP to my friends."
When they get the Ip they wont be able to join, why?
BECAUSE THE PORTS ARE NOT OPEN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN.
:cough:
Yea so the ports are not open so now we have to open the ports.
If you have less than 5 people playing on your server , then you can choose the quicker way and download hamachi and host a network there.
But if there will be more than 5 players , then this just got serious 8).
(not really)
Now you have Port Forward.
I'm just gonna give you the first step to Port Forwarding , cause the rest is on your Router.
Go to your startmenu ( click on run for XP )
type in the search " CMD " ( type in cmd in run for XP )
Enter , Command prompt should pop up.
Now type in this
Ipconfig
Now some text will cover the CMD.
Don't worry there is no one hacking with all those IPs.
Now if you have a VPN installed or a Software that creates Virtual Ports and stuff , then this might be hard for you , but if not then simply find the first
"Default Gateway" , if you have Virtual Ports then you have to find the correct one , will explain later.
Now next to default gateway there will be a IP , likely starting with a 192.168.*.*
Now type that in your browser , it will lead you to your Routers blah blah.
|
v
(I type this before typing ^)

Port Forwarding isn't same in all routers , but there is a website which can help you.
http://portforward.com/
I have a Cisco EA 2700 router Smart Wifi , and it's very simple to port forward.
NOTE :
If you have a Belkin F7D2301v1 , you will not be able to Port Forward.

For an EA 2700 , using Smart Wifi , Simply login and go to Security , Apps and Gaming , Single Port forwarding and type in the ports you want to open.

The Logs Fix

Alright , you have Port Forwarded now and your Server is running and everything is great , but then suddenly you realize..NO GUI LOGS?!
Not a big problem.
Simple fix for that , I hope you downloaded  the .jar !
Make sure .jar file is in your Server directory.
If not already , rename the .jar and remove all numbers.
Minecraft_server.jar .. should be.
Now create a new .txt and Paste this in
Code: [Select]
java -Xmx2048M -Xms2048M -jar minecraft_server.jar noguiNow save it , but when the window pops up for saving it , change the Save As Type to All Document and rename it to
"Run.bat"

The RAM

IMPORTANT : -Xmx2048m means how much RAM is allocated to the server.
You can change it as you like
1GB - 1024m
and so on.

Security

Maybe a little Side note. If u make your own server u use your ip for it. This mean if u wanna let anyone play u have to give your ip. If u dont trust a person with it dont give ip.
Or make a hamachi server to have a secret ip which also works to play mc with a couple friends.
Firewall can help in these situations.

InGame commands.
To use some In-Game commands , you need to become a OP , or I like to call Operator.
You're going to go the server GUI ( If you're not using the .bat to run it ).
If you're using the .bat to run it , just click on it and it will appear like a CMD.
Now type in it  "op (name)"
Example :

Now you will be able to use InGame commands such as , /gamemode or /kick or /ban.
Type /help to display all commands ( some for non-OP's ).

The Bans

To ban a player you simply type in the Console or Chat " /ban (user) "
To unban a player you type /pardon (user)

Whitelisting

Having troubles that someone knows your Ip and joins your server and banning him doesn't work?
Okay so you should know this first.
Whitelisting allows a player to join only if his name is in the whitelist file.
It's not really needed to whitelist if you're running a Premium server , or in other words , you kept the online_mode=true , because banned player would not be able to join , while in cracked they can change Name and join.
To whitelist , first go to Server properties files and find " white-list=false "
Change false to true.
Now go to server console or in-game , and type in " /whitelist add name "
( no "/" if you're typing in console )

Cracked server or Premium.

This is a very important subject , it's best if you make a premium server. Why?
Making a cracked server means putting everyone at risk , In a cracked launcher you can select any name you want , and you can change it anytime.
That means that if someone is not OP , he can simply change the name to your name and join in the server , now he spawns where you left off and is now OP.
How do I prevent this for cracked servers?!??
It's a vanilla server , no way to stop this.
If you make a bukkit server then there is a simple way to stop this , a plugin which tells players to /register and /login.

The World

A Griefer blew up my world , now I want to start all over again!
Simple , open the Server Properties file and search for
level-name=world
To start a new world you simply change that "world" to something else , the Server will create the world by itself.
If you want to play Custom Maps , download them and place them in the Server Directory , now change "world" in Properties to the name of the map.

Flat World
You want a Flat World to Build stuff in Creative mode?
No worries , just open Server Properties file and look for
level-type=DEFAULT
Change DEFAULT to FLAT.
Now the map will be full Flat with grass.
You can change the grass to some other block ( Personally I like Sand Stone )
To change it to some other blocks , I really don't know an easier way to do it.
You need to do this :
Run Minecraft.exe
Go to Singleplayer
Create New World
Change World Name to something you will remember or keep it the same.
Now click on More World Options.
World Type , change to SuperFlat
Press Customize.
Click Presets
Find Desert and click Use Preset.
Remove the Sand from top and let the SandStone be up.
Now create the world , once that's over. Exit Minecraft.
Go to startmenu and type in Run.
Open Run.EXE and type in the following
%appdata%
Now Click on .Minecraft and go to Folder named SAVES.
Choose the world from there and copy the world and paste it into your Server Directory and change Level-name=(name)

The step from Startmenu can be used to port Singleplayer maps to Multiplayer Servers.

Server Properties File

I'm going to explain the SPF , Server properties file.
You can use this file to change things in your server.

Ill start off with :

generator-settings : This setting is used to customize the SuperFlat world , but you must know the code for the blocks , the way I explained it might seem easier.

op-permission-level : Can be set to 1-4.
If set to 1 , OP's have all access to spawn , they can break blocks in the Spawn.
                                If set to 2 , OP's can use commands like /clear, /difficulty, /effect, /gamemode, /gamerule, /give, and /tp, and can also edit command blocks.
                                If set to 3 , OP's can use commands like /ban, /deop, /kick, and /op.
If set to 4 , OP's can use /stop to stop the server.

allow-nether : Allows players to travel to nether if set to true.
Nether Portals will not work if set to false.

level-name : Can be changed to other names to create new world , and also can be used to Port SP maps to MP.
Look at SuperFlat world on top.

enable-query : Uploads data to Minecraft servers to get Information.

allow-flight : Allows users to use flight on your server while in Survival mode, mods can be used to fly while in survival , recommended to keep it False.

announce-player-achievements : Server automatically announces in Chat when player gets an achievement.

server-port : Server port , you must forward this Port for players to join your server , default Port is 25565.

level-type : Changes type of map which is generated by the server.
                    DEFAULT - Standard world.
FLAT - A flat world with no features, meant for building.
LARGEBIOMES - Same as default but all biomes are larger.

enable-rcon : Enables remote access to console.

force-gamemode : Forces players to join at Default Server set Gamemode.

level-seed : Used to add a Seed to your Server , a Seed is unique code which generates a different world , if two servers use same seed , the same map will be
generated , but not player built structures.

server-ip : Set this if you want the server to bind to a another IP address , this can be used if you're hosting server through Hamachi.
Strongly recommended to keep this blank.

max-build-height : Maximum height which players are allowed to build.

spawn-npcs : If enabled , villagers will spawn.
If disabled , villagers will NOT spawn.

white-list : Set to true if you want specific names ( chosen by you ) to join the server.

spawn-animals : If enabled , animals will spawn
If disabled , animals will NOT spawn.

snooper-enabled : Sets whether server sends Data to minecraft servers.
                              Disabling thing might improve performance.

hardcore : Enables hardcore mode.
If enabled , players who die will be PERMANENTLY banned.

online-mode : Setting this to false will allow unlicensed players to join.
Setting this to true will only allowed licensed players to join.

resource-pack : This is used to assign a Resource pack or a texture pack to the server , players will be given a choice to download the specific Resource pack.

pvp : If set to true , players will be able to attack each other.
If set to false , players will NOT be able to attack each other.

difficulty : Sets difficulty in the server.
               0 - Peaceful
               1 - Easy
               2 - Normal
               3 - Hard

enable-command-block : Can be enabled if OP's want to use Command Blocks , command blocks can be used to create Custom Maps.

player-idle-timeout : If set to 0 , it is disabled.
If set to 1 , Players who are inactive for 1 minute will be kicked.
If set to 2 , *2 Minutes will be kicked.

gamemode : Can be used to change the mode of the gameplay.
                    0 - Survival.
                    1 - Creative.
                    2 - Adventure.

max-players : Change value to set maximum Players in server.

spawn-monsters : If enabled , Monsters will spawn.
If disabled , Monsters will NOT spawn.

view-distance : Sets the amount of the World Data to the Player.
Default is 10 and recommended , can be lowered to reduce server lag.

generate-structures : If set to true , villages will be generated
If set to false , villages will NOT be generated.

motd : Message Of The Day , Changing this will display what you have changed it to if server is added to favourites.

With Hamachi you can only let 4 players join your network , 5 slots, you take 1 left is 4.
You can use Hamachi if you have lower than 5 players.

Just for those who don't know how to use hamachi...
All you do is download Hamachi , install and run.
Create existing network -> Name
                                            Pass
Tell others the network name and pass , they join.
Have fun.

Spigot is a lighter alternative to bukkit with similar functionality (uses less ram and cpu than bukkit)
Here is a vanilla (no plugins) server with spigot installed
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ajdmvf44f46360l/Spigot_Minecraft_vanilla.rar

And here is a server with spigot installed (with essentials)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/7xbbh1vc7b8ndcg/Spigot+Minecraft+plugins.rar

You can edit them to your liking and you can ask me if you need any help
