Case #1 - The Bank Robbery (Easy Case)
Plot: A bank robbery took place early in the morning. Soon after, you are at the crime scene, trying to find out exactly what happened and the make the people responsible pay for what they did.

Quote
New York, Central Bank, 6:24AM, February 20th, 2008.
The 2 security guards checked the whole bank inside once again, locked the doors, and stood outside, guarding the main entrance.
-Oh, crap. Frank, I gotta go pee man. Will you be ok for 5 minutes?
-Yeah Rob, go to that small alley across the street, noone's gonna see you there.
It was a quiet night, not many cars and people were passing by. Frank suddenly heard a small scream across the street, from that alley where Rob went. It sounded like someone was trying to scream but was choking.
-Rob? Rob? You there? He turned on his flashlight and approached the alley.
It was quite dark, there were some big trashcans, some empty boxes on the side, and then, a door that was half open.
-Rob? Are you in there? He approached it when someone grabbed him from the neck and pulled him inside.
The Central Bank's door got unlocked. Someone was inside. The safe security was breached. The alarm started ringing. The safe was opened and the money inside were taken.
-Let's go, let's go! The cops are coming.
Not long after, the police were already on the crime scene. The employees and bank staff were anxious and in confusion.
The police looked around the safe. They searched for fingerprints, any DNA, even a tiny hair, but found nothing. They only think they found was a small piece of paper, but it was torn and erased with a marker and you could only read number "5" in the beginning and number "1" at the end of it.
-Eh, that could be anything, even a client's phone number... Still no clues here.
They headed to Miss Mandons, the director, who was nearby.
-Miss Nelly Mandons, you are the director, right?
-Yes, that's right.
-Officers Ross Palon and Leland Brooks, we are here with the investigation team, we would like to ask you some questions.
-Of course.
-What exactly happened this morning?
-At about 7AM I was called by Rob Simmons, one of the 2 security guards that were on duty, that the bank had just been robbed and Frank was missing. I, of course, got up immediately, called the police and came here about 20 minutes later.
-The bank safe was opened, but doesn't it open only once a day and only gets controlled only by a timer that opens it a specific time in the day and locks it again? How is it possible it was opened this morning for the robbery?
-It is almost impossible to open the safe outside the timer hours, but it can happen. But it would require months of efforts and hacking into the system which is highly protected and can only be accessed from inside the bank.
-So you're telling us it was probably an inside job?
-Possibly, or some employees' account was hacked, but that whole process could even take years. The safe's sytem is monitored from these 5 computers, and there is 1 employee for each that have their own ID. They use it to sign it to the system that monitors the safe's security.
To breach that security is possible only on those 5 computers, and mine.
-I see. Can we have a list of those employees, their IDs, and yours?
-Sure. Here it is.
-Thank you for your time.
The employee list:
Jack Tribson (ID: 57849)
Ronald Cerone (ID: 19004)
Melinda Reiss (ID: 61948)
Kelly Meyson (ID: 91305)
Beck Pole (ID: 53781)
Nelly Mandons (ID: 77150)
-Hello sir. You're Rob Simmons, the security guard on duty when the robbery took place.
-That's right.
-Can you tell us what happened?
-It was about half past six, I went across the street, at that dark alley, far inside at the end of it where it leads to a dead end, to.. you know.. pee. I was only gone for a couple of minutes when I heard the alarm.
I ran back to the bank, the door was unlocked, and so was the safe. But noone was there, not even Frank. He was gone, I couldn't find him anywhere.... oh god. Soon later, I called miss Mandons and told her what happened.
The police went across the street, to that alley. They saw a couple of big trash cans and some empty boxes. They also saw some footprints, as the floor was wet from a recent rainfall. There were probably 2 sets of footprints, but distorted, as the floor was getting dry this morning cause of the sun.
The prints suddenly stopped. They looked around and saw a door next to them. Closed. It had some fingerprints on it.
-Take these samples to the lab, if the prints are anyone's that has been arrested before, we'll find a match. Or else, just in case we have a suspect to compare.
They opened the door, it was a small, dark, dusty old storage room, and Frank's dead body was there, lying on the floor. He was strangled with a wire, as the marks on his neck show.
In the meantime, other officers followed the alley looking for more footprints, until they reached a wall, a dead end, deep in the alley. But no further footprints were found or anything else to indicate someone had been there.
They took pictures of the scenes and collected any evidence possible, but they had 1 last thing to do. Talk to the employees.
-Mr. Tribson, where were you this morning between 6 to 7AM?
-At home, with my wife. We woke up at about 6, had some breakfast, watched some TV before I came here to work.
-Can she confirm this?
-Sure, we were watching an old series on TV, you know, that one called "Secret Affairs".
..
-Mr. Cerone, how about you, sir?
-Was sleeping with my wife and 2 kids next to us. We woke up at about 6.30, they can all confirm this I guess.
..
-Miss Reiss?
-I was at a club, with 2 friends, but they left at about 5AM and I left sometime later, maybe an hour, but you can ask the bartender.
..
-Miss Meyson?
-I was sleeping at my house, alone.
-So noone can confirm this?
-No, I am sorry.
..
-Mr. Pole, how about you?
-I was at home, watching some TV, I woke up at about 6AM.
-So noone can prove your aliby? What were you watching.
-Eh, you know.. the.. football match. They were showing it again on channel 5.
-Alright, thank you. And.. don't eat your fingernails, sir, it's unhealthy.
-Oh, yeah, thanks. I just do that when I'm nervous.. and you know.. this whole robbery.. any of us could be in danger now.
..
-Miss Mandons, same questions.
-I was at home as well, with my fiance, we had breakfast about about 6.30 and at 7.30 I left home to come to work.
-Alright, thank you for your time.
They returned to the police station with everything they had gathered.

That is all you need. Read the case carefully, study the clues and questionings and find out who could've robbed the bank and killed the security guard.

here're some clues
Quote
read number "5" in the beginning and number "1" at the end of it.
Beck Pole (ID: 53781)
they found a page , two numbers were written over it and half of it was rubbed thats mean Beck pole gave his ID to other person, beck might be his crime partner..

5 and 1 okay,
Beck Pole (ID: 53781)
Beck has 5 then 1, while Neilly has 1 then 5, so it's only Beck the suspect for me, furthermore, Beck was eating his nails, a sign of nervousity as well as panic and fear. He knew he was the robber, while no one was nervous, only Beck was. Also football isn't shown at 6am, even replays, so Beck Pole is the Robber and the suspect.
GImme my gift.

Good job both of you, you have some points, but I won't say if all of them are correct or wrong. All I will say for now is you're not doing bad, but there's more into it ;)

Beck pole is just the accomplice of the robber, because his ID matches the piece of paper and because why would he need to write it down since he probably memorized it by then, unless he's giving it to someone, and he's very nervous.
Now Rob's story doesn't make sense, if he was taking a piss in that alley where Frank got killed, how come he didn't notice or hear anything, so he's probably the robber and Frank's murderer.
Rob's my suspect.

More for it, Miss Meyson also has 1 and 5 in her ID and of course hasn't any one to confirm her theory, so she's  a suspect to me. I've noticed that the officer asked for the director's ID too but she didn't mention it, either you forgot it or it's done on purpose not to let them know about her.

There director's ID is there, the last one on the list :D

Good job guys, keep going, I need more clues, evidence!!!

As most of us thought that Beck is the robber, I think he was with them.
As Phsycho mentioned, Beck knows his ID by heart. However, police found the paper with his Id which suggests that Beck gave his ID to someone. But to who?
One of the employees', Miss Reiss,  had been asked where she was at that time and this is what she said:
-Miss Reiss?
-I was at a club, with 2 friends, but they left at about 5AM and I left sometime later, maybe an hour, but you can ask the bartender.
This arises one thing is that she or her friends were with Beck at that time.
Furthermore, I believe that Rob was involved in there and he was the person who killed Frank because only two of them had a key to the door, isn't it?
One thing that proves Rob wasn't the only one or Beck wasn't the only one, is this line:
-Let's go, let's go! The cops are coming.
Meaning there were more that one.

One more thing, the robbery, I believe, happened between 6.30 and 7.00. One of the first lines state that the 2 security guards checked the whole bank inside once again, locked the doors, and stood outside, guarding the main entrance. But then, Rob goes for 5 minutes for "toilet" then everything happens.

One of the words that disturb me and a lot of people missed is the word "torn". The paper was torn and something was erased. If to dig more deeply, it suggests that the number 5 and number 1 were probably there to confuse us. Why something would be then erased? Something tells me that Beck was forced by robbers to give his ID. That is why at the end, when police officers asked him, he was nervous and he said he fears to be in danger

The director cantbe the onewgo robbed as he's a director.. Now I'm thinking of the inverse scenario, it's made by the employee to leave the paper written 5 then 1 to lead the proofstowzrd the ID's that containthe previous numbers while, the 3 others were there during the crime, their wifes can confirm that? What if they are aware of it.
Also the director said 2 guards and rob. While the story says just rob and franck, so either she lied or Franck lied to her.

Only if you have a suspect to compare it to, who is your suspect?
I'm almost 100% sure that the murder and robbery were not committed by the same person.
My first suspect is the security "Rob". The police said that they found only 2 sets of footprints at the alley, which means that one of them belongs to Frank and the other one belongs to the person who lured Frank away from the bank in order to allow his partner to enter the bank easily.
My second suspect is Beck Pole. The police found a piece of paper that was torn, with the number 5 at the beginning of it, 1 at it's end and the numbers in between erased by a marker. Those 2 numbers match the first and last numbers on Beck Pole's ID. However, if Beck was the one who robbed, why should he write his own ID that he should know by hard on a piece of paper?
I believe the story went something like this: Beck gave his ID on a piece of paper to Rob because Rob had the key to the bank. Rob told Frank that he was going to pee. He started walking towards the alley, and when he was no longer in Frank's sight, he went and hid somewhere close to the bank. Beck was waiting at the alley, and when he noticed Rob hiding, he made some noise to lure Frank away from the bank and to the alleys, where he grabbed hit and killed him. Rob at that time was in the bank robbing. After Beck killed Frank, he was heading towards the bank to help his partner, when he heard the sirens of the police. He rushed to the bank and warned Rob that the police were coming. Rob immediately grabbed a marker and scratched the ID and gave the money to Beck who took it to a safe place. Rob didn't go with him because he had to stay at the crime scene since he's the security.

You're both overthinking, this case is much simpler and there are clues, not "fake" clues. and no dams, there cannot be 20 people in this, the wives are the alibies, their stories are true.

What I want from you is to find the missing parts. What happened between the 2 security guards, whose ID was used and why, who is the murderer of Frank and support it with facts.

It's easy, Rob settle it to catch up franck so he can kill him easily, it was him who grabbed him from his neck.
Also Beck's ID as it starts with 5 and ends with 1.
Lets imagine, Rob lied so that he can get franck out of the security room, Beck then comes in and steals the money, Rob kills Franck and here it is.

Well, that's when the fingerprint test result matters.

The police need a warrant to get someone's DNA or fingerprints, we don't have clues = no fingerprints. However, I am giving you 1 option. Your decision is Beck Pole. We will see tomorrow, the police station is closed at the moment, thus the police lab as well :D

Frank said to Rob "Yeah Rob, go to that small alley across the street, noone's gonna see you there." So no one except Rob can anticipate Frank going to alley for helping Rob. Therefore, the 2 sets of footprints mentioned must be of Rob and Frank.  Rob strangled Frank from the storage room(Rob is the security guard, so he must have the key for the storage room as well), dragged and murdered him.

The accomplice must be "Miss Reiss" because she was in the club until 6 AM. And the crime took place between 6 to 7 AM. She might have gone to the bank after 6 AM and hid inside the bank with the help of Rob. So when both guards were checking the whole bank inside, Rob might have pretended to look for the area where Reiss was hiding. At around 6:24, both guards locked the door and went outside. Then Rob murdered Frank. After that, he opened  bank's door. In  meantime, Reiss did the whole robbery because it is mentioned in the story that "The Central Bank's door got unlocked. Someone was inside. The safe security was breached." They might have perfectly timed the murder and the robbery.

About a small piece of paper with "5" in the beginning and number "1" at the end, I think Reiss might have done this purposely to put the allegation on Beck Pole because she might have known his anxious nature, which made him the perfect candidate to put blame on. This can be supported by his statement "Oh, yeah, thanks. I just do that when I'm nervous.. and you know.. this whole robbery.. any of us could be in danger now.". And it might not be hard for Reiss to hack the ID of Beck Pole since she has expertise in monitoring the safe security.

Well, for suspecting Miss Reiss, it depends whether she was drunk in the club or not? And also how far the club was? If she was drunk and the club was really far from the bank, my whole theory  about her fails!

Haven't read the entire thing yet, but I am guessing the robbery will take place when Rob goes to pee.

-Yeah Rob, go to that small alley across the street, noone's gonna see you there.
Frank told Rob where to go take a piss.

It was a quiet night, not many cars and people were passing by. Frank suddenly heard a small scream across the street, from that alley where Rob went. It sounded like someone was trying to scream but was choking.
Frank herd the muffled screaming all the way across the street, surely Rob would have heard it, there is no way that Rob wouldn't have herd it, he was right there in the alley.

-Rob? Rob? You there? He turned on his flashlight and approached the alley.
It was quite dark, there were some big trashcans, some empty boxes on the side, and then, a door that was half open.
I am having a feeling that Frank is being set up by Rob, there were boxes and trashcans around, plenty enough room and space to hide behind a box and take a piss. That removes the possibility for Rob to be anywhere else as a place to pee was right there. Suspicious that Rob is setting Frank up.

-Rob? Are you in there? He approached it when someone grabbed him from the neck and pulled him inside.
Yep, Frank is killed. Now I am 100% convinced that Rob set Frank up. Could be debunked later if evidence stating otherwise is found.

The Central Bank's door got unlocked. Someone was inside. The safe security was breached. The alarm started ringing. The safe was opened and the money inside were taken.
Was there some signs of force entry on the bank door? I am assuming that since you said 'unlocked' that someone had a key. If so, Rob is my main suspect until now.

-Let's go, let's go! The cops are coming.
I mean to unlock the door, safe was broken into and money taken. Where was Rob at this time? This surely took 5 minutes+? Could Rob be taking a piss for 5 mins? I say no.

That number will resurface somewhere, we will see.

We know that the robbery took place between 6:24 AM and 7:00 AM, since the scenario here starts at 6:24 AM and the director was called by Rob at 7:00 AM. Now I am 100% sure that Rob is a bad guy. He called at 7:00 AM, what was he doing for the entire 30 mins? Taking a piss for that long? I smell bullshit.

Each computer has a staff member that can access it. So by knowing which computer the 'hacking' took place on, we can tie that to the staff member's ID. OH maybe this is where we see that number we saw on the piece of paper above.

To breach that security is possible only on those 5 computers, and mine.
-I see. Can we have a list of those employees, their IDs, and yours?
-Sure. Here it is.
-Thank you for your time.
The employee list:
Jack Tribson (ID: 57849)
Ronald Cerone (ID: 19004)
Melinda Reiss (ID: 61948)
Kelly Meyson (ID: 91305)
Beck Pole (ID: 53781)
Nelly Mandons (ID: 77150)
Yep here we go, see anything familiar? 'Beck Pole (ID: 53781) that ID number starts with a 5 and ends with a 1. Surely this has to do with the piece of paper found earlier. The inside man?

All the way at the end to take a pee? It was 6:30 AM, there couldn't be a lot of people on the street for him to go all the way down the alley. Plus, at the beginning, we know that there were not alot of cars or pedestrians on the street. There was no need for Rob to go all the way at the end. Gone for a couple of minutes before he heard the alaram? There was a 30 minute window when the robbery started and when he called the director. He is lying.

I ran back to the bank, the door was unlocked, and so was the safe. But noone was there, not even Frank. He was gone, I couldn't find him anywhere.... oh god. Soon later, I called miss Mandons and told her what happened.
Soon later? This is a bank robbery, you can't not report the robbery immediately. Soon later does not cut it. By the way, that soon later is almost 30 minutes. Plenty of time for the robbers to open the secure safe and take all the money.

The police went across the street, to that alley. They saw a couple of big trash cans and some empty boxes. They also saw some footprints, as the floor was wet from a recent rainfall. There were probably 2 sets of footprints, but distorted, as the floor was getting dry this morning cause of the sun.
I am guessing that those two footprints belong to Frank and Rob.

The prints suddenly stopped. They looked around and saw a door next to them.
If Rob really did go all the way down the alley, there must have been a third set of footprints to show where he went.

Closed. It had some fingerprints on it.
The door was closed, that means Frank did not touch the door. Because we know that the door was half open when Frank approached it. The killer must have killed Frank and then closed the door. I am guessing those fingerprints must have been Rob's. We shall see soon.

-Take these samples to the lab, if the prints are anyone's that has been arrested before, we'll find a match. Or else, just in case we have a suspect to compare.
Yep we can compare the fingerprints that we have with Rob's, I am confident that we will have a match.

Even more proof that Rob did not go all the way at the end of the alley to take a pee. Since there was no pee and no footprints.

He is clear.

..
-Mr. Cerone, how about you, sir?
-Was sleeping with my wife and 2 kids next to us. We woke up at about 6.30, they can all confirm this I guess.
He is clear.

..
-Miss Reiss?
-I was at a club, with 2 friends, but they left at about 5AM and I left sometime later, maybe an hour, but you can ask the bartender.
She is clear if the bartender vouches for her. But why would you stay at the club after your friends have left? Can we ask the bartender to give us his statement?

..
-Miss Meyson?
-I was sleeping at my house, alone.
-So noone can confirm this?
-No, I am sorry.
She is not a suspect at this time, but we can always come back to that later.

..
-Mr. Pole, how about you?
-I was at home, watching some TV, I woke up at about 6AM.
-So noone can prove your aliby? What were you watching.
-Eh, you know.. the.. football match. They were showing it again on channel 5.
-Alright, thank you. And.. don't eat your fingernails, sir, it's unhealthy.
-Oh, yeah, thanks. I just do that when I'm nervous.. and you know.. this whole robbery.. any of us could be in danger now.
This is the guy that had the ID matching the piece of paper we found earlier. Also he has no aliby that can be proved by anyone else. He is nervous because he knows he did something wrong. Usually when a robbery or whatever happens and the cops are there, the victims start feeling relaxed as the cops are there to protect them. He was nervous as hell, so even more suspicious that he was the inside man. Can we check what was on at that time on channel 5? To see if he was saying the truth or not?

..
-Miss Mandons, same questions.
-I was at home as well, with my fiance, we had breakfast about about 6.30 and at 7.30 I left home to come to work.
-Alright, thank you for your time.
She is clear.

They returned to the police station with everything they had gathered.

Here is what I think happened and who my suspects are:
1. Rob definitely is my main suspect here as his story does not check out. He did not go all the down the alley as he stated, it took him 30 minutes since the start of the robbery to call the director and inform her of the robbery since she was the one that called to cops.
2. Get a warrant and compare the finger print found on the door handle and that of Rob's.
3. It is either Beck Pole or Mrs Reiss because they are both suspicious. If we can get answers to the questions I asked above, we would get more info on who to accuse of being the inside man.
4. I would suggest charging Rob with murder and robbery. The inside man would be either Pole or Reiss. It all depends on the answers to the questions I asked above regarding each of those supposed whereabouts.

How did I do?

@java GIRL your theory is nice and possible, but in that case, miss Meyson must also be a suspect. Also, if someone was already in the bank, how was he able to get out if the doors were locked from the outside? he/she needs the keys.
I don't think it's the first time that Rob takes a piss :D so it must be a well known place for both of them.

Oh yeah Meyson can also be the suspect. And  as I said before, Rob must have murdered Frank and opened the door. And in meantime Miss Reiss might have done the robbery. The murder and robbery might have been timed before.

Rob, do it in rob. At least that my opinion.
Quote
The police returned to the bank with a warrant.
-Mr.Simmons, we have a warrant for your fingerprints.
-What? No way, why should I give you my fingerprints?
-Are you going to give us your prints or should we take them by force down at the station?
-...alright, alright.
They compared the prints found on the door with Rob's, it was a perfect match!
-We got him!

After reading all the clues and theories you've found, I think we can easily say the case can move on:
Quote
The police once again returned to the scene of the crime, but this time would be the last.
-Mr.Simmons and mr.Pole, can we have a word please?
-What is it again, we're trying to work here, said Beck.
-You robbed the bank. We have evidence that connect you with the case.
-What? Impossible! said Rob in frustration.
-Here's what happened: You've planned this for a very long time, Beck had been trying to break into the safe security system for months. When he finally managed to do it, your plan was ready to move to the next stage. You hid in the alley across and tried to attact Frank. You must've made a sound or something to get his attention, he approached, you grabbed him and killed him in that storage room. You fingerprints confirmed it, but what really made us suspicious was your story that you went at the end of the alley to pee, cause when we check that alley, the prints ended near the noor, which is far from the dead end, and no sign of you really "having done your job" at that alley. You killed Frank and all you had to do was unlock the doors, for Beck to approach. You guys needed about half hour to complete this plan, and that's why the director was called at 7AM. You had Beck's ID in case anything goes wrong, for example if you failed to kill Frank, how could Beck show up? However, you dropped that piece of paper, and didn't do enough to hide Beck's ID, and he is the only person who knows that number other than the director, which connects you immediately to the case, and makes you an accomplise to murder!
-Murder? No, no Rob did it all by himself, I have no idea!
-Beck, you piece of crap, don't lie to get away. Yes officers, he helped me.. I am so sorry... I had no choice... I needed money..
-Saving these for the jury, mr.Simmons. And, mr.Beck, save the drama, we know you were involved! Your alibi is not solid, and your ID is private. The question is, did you do all these by yourself? Hack the entire system, plan the robbery with Rob?
-Will this help my case? I don't wanna be charged for murder, please!!!
-Maybe it will mr.Pole.
-Okay, I admit it, Melinda Reiss helped me, she helped me hack the system and take the money from the safe. We were gonna pay the bartender off to confirm this, but I don't wanna be charged for murder!
-What? You son of a bitch, you traitor!! I swear I had nothing to do with the robbery!!!
-Mr.Simmons, Mr.Pole, Ms.Reiss, you're under arrest for the murder of Frank Carter and robbery. You have the right to remain silent, everything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney....
Great job all of you, you solved the case pretty quickly. But there's much more to come, stay tuned!
