Everything provides FPS. Eg : including Games, FPS Shooters, video films, motion capture systems and many more provide a fps. Few games allows you to see em, few not.
FPS is basically in every graphical process but we just don't see it in human's eyes
What is FPS?
Word "FPS" stands for Frames per second. More frames you got, you get well, lets say your games get a bits faster and all of attributes are working better, such as you can run faster, you can jump higher just because of fps.
Although too much fps will cause your games to be slow down because of too many frames to be displayed in short time. However we'll talk about that later. You can read more about fps here : by clicking here (http://\\\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate\\\")
How do i get FPS?
Basically, you are already having a fps rate. Although you can always improve it.
Most commands are throgh console and problem is, some commands what are the same are different in some games. Example : fps_max in Counterstrike is com_maxfps in Call of Duty. Since Ambrosia is counterstrike suspected community, this tutorial will also be about FPS improving on Counterstrike.
Follow me step by step :
1. Run your Counterstrike. It doesn't matter if you run it through hl.exe or cstrike.exe
2. Open your console [ default ` / ~ ] button, ( button under escape )
3. Write in it cl_showfps 1 press, enter.
4. There are 2 ways to complete this step
a) You can write following commands in console, 1 by 1 (check for commands slightly below)
B) or, Go to your counterstrike directory
(default got steam is : "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\"Your steam name"\counter-strike\cstrike )
(default for non-steam is : "C:\Program Files\Counterstrike\cstrike" )
Find there file named : userconfig.cfg
If you don't have file 1, simply google it and download which one you want. In bottom of config paste these following commands
Commands :
fps_override 1
cl_shadows 0
fps_max 200
developer 1
sys_ticrate 1000
rate 25000
cl_rate 10000
gl_picmip 2
gl_max_size 512
cl_yawspeed 300
gl_playermip 2
5. If you added those commands by userconfig.cfg way you have to click save on yours userconfig.cfg file close it and restart your counterstrike, if you did it by console you can leave your Counterstrike running.
Now check in the upper screen, your fps should be about 100. You can modify em by command
fps_max #value, examples : fps_max 101, fps_max 450 etc.
If this works for you, skip the step 5 & step 6 and check How to use FPS wisely
5.If your fps is stucked on 90 or still on 60, you'll have to follow more steps.
Now this might be a bit harder. To do this, you must have a nVidia, Dell or Atti video - graphics card
5.1 If you know your graphics card name, you can ignore this step. However be 100% sure because mistakes may screw up your graphics.
So, if you don't know your graphic card, we'll need to find out. Click here to see ur gphx card : http://i914.photobuc...009/Grafika.png (http://\\\"http://i914.photobucket.com/albums/ac344/Desansilentkill2009/Grafika.png\\\")
If you have problems findint it through pictures.
Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Display [ there's Name of gphx card ]
Now you need to find your opengl.dll driver. Im warning you yet again, don't mess with it and follow carefully or it might mess up your graphics.
go to "C:/Windows/System32/ [ find opengl.dll] - if you have ati card [ atioglxx.dll ]
Copy it, and im writing yet again COPY do not transfer / cut it! to your gldrv folder.
(Default steam : C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\"your steam name"\counter-strike\gldrv)
(Default non-steam : C:\Program Files\Counterstrike\gldrv)
Now open your drvmap.txt file (found in gldrv directory where you pasted opengl.dll / atioglxx.dll)
Once the drvmap.txt is opened
change code to - depending on file you selected.
If you used opengl.dll do - gldrv/opengl.dll
If you used aioglxx.dll do - gldrv/atioglxx.dll
Sidenote : On some computers may occur you don't have opengl.dll but opengl32.dll Use that one then
Click save.
If this works for you, skip the step 6 and check How to use FPS wisely
If your fps is still around 60 or 90 it's your graphic card vsync problem
vsync is in full name vertical sync that forces your graphic card to limit the value of FPS. You can change it really easily, although it's depending on what gphx card are you using.
a) If you're using Nvidia Card, do :
1. Open control panel in windows.
2. There will be a Nvidia icon that says "Nvidia Control Panel". Click on that.
3. Now you want to click on "manage 3d settings" on the side menu of the control panel.
4. Make sure you are looking at global settings, then scroll down to the bottom and force the vertical sync off.
B) If you're using Atti Card, do:
1. Open control panel in windows.
2. Click on the ATI Catalyst Control Center
3. Now in the menu on the left hand side, click "all settings"
4. Scroll to the bottom and put the "Wait for vertical refresh" all the way down till it says always off.
c) If you're using Dell Card, do :
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on display or appearence and themes
3. Click on settings , then advanced.
4. On the top you will see Intel Extreme Graphics or Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
5. Now click on Graphics Properties
6. Open the OpenGL or 3D Settings
7. Finally to disable vsync, set Asynchronous Flip to On, and then click Apply.

Done! YOUR FPS SHOULD BE WORKING LIKE A CHARM NOW. You can always set amount of fps by command :
fps_max #value, example : fps_max 101, fps_max 450 etc. Also make sure always your :
developer is set to 1 ( in console : developer 1 )
How to use FPS wisely?
Every game and every mod has it very own best fps level. So here are few smart settings :
If you're playing on classic shooting mode, select ur fps_max about 250, if scope about 150.
If you're playing on surf, select ur fps_max about 115.
If you're playing on deathrun, if you want to go fast select about 200-300. If you want to go fast, although a bit slower to have more time to react 400-500

[warn]As of latest steam Counter-strike 1.6 update, it is now necessary to use fps_override 1 alongside developer 1 and fps_max #value[/warn]

Config stands for singleplayer (hl.exe), userconfig for multiplayer. If they don't have userconfig it's set as default and as i mentioned in tutorial, you can also simply download userconfig.

About the vertical sync, Does it make ur FPS higher? Because u said turn it off, Mine is currently on Use the 3D settings or something, I can turn it off though

Wow thanks lol, Only thing i changed while reading this whole tut was putting the Vertical sync off and my fps went from 60 to 101 lol. Thanks ;)!

A little tip from me: dont play on classic shooting mode with developer 1, u become slower and the recoil is much more important.

Redsnake, if you make it to 250 you won't actually go slower but faster.

I have got Intel HD Graphics, But on my VSync, I can just choose one of these, " Application Setting " & " On"what do i do ?

application seting rofl... if you set it on it will be on anyway...i think there is a command to disable vsync in game... only idk that..so application setting is better because it will disable when the game dont want/turn it on

Rawr, the commands are not the right one's --'. And I tried them, my eyes were hurting me from it..graphics changed..idk..I installed my cfg again and it's ok. They are not the right one's..

They are right ones. Ofcouorse graphics are changed for getting more stable fps.Althought all professional players use that for more stable playing (even cod series etc).If you don't want em, simply skip the opengl.dll step.

Every 1 can play cs.If you cant throw ur pc outside...My fps is 220 so i dont get it why people are complaining about lagg or something.Dont forget cs is 10 years old game.And my pc is good enough for me.As i will get new pc and that is too fast for cs.And i dont know when but soon i guess.

Hi dude, when i add those commandes to my userconfig, i got more fps i touch more, but i think the mouse acceleration comeback, because i removed the acceleration with -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel, ??? or that just because of sys_ticrate? because i had 100 and now 1000?Thank you :D

There is 3 options, Application settings .., Force On, Force Off.

There is mistake in your tuto , there is no commande called gl_maxsize, there is gl_max_size and it refere of the memory of ur card graphic, for more quality set it to gl_max_size 512, or for performance set it as gl_max_size 256, that allabout : gl_picmip 2 is more then 1, and 1 is more then 0, 0 is the best quality and the low performance and when u increase this value u will get more performance, and the max is 2gl_playermip 2 : same as gl_picmip, anyway, im playing with the value 2 for the both, and i got more fps Thank you guys :)

Raw+ thanks for the guide man :D it helped a lot but may I add one more tip to it :)
I myself have a Dell laptop with intel G45 Graphic card (I know it sucks (http://www.ambrosia-servers.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png) ) I followed your guide then got a decent fps about 37 to 40 fps ,notice I said decent (yeah that's how much my card suck ) then after a awhile I noticed one thing that if I press Esc key ( to go to opionts and find server ....etc ,the game-play goes so smooth like I have a stable 60 fps then it hit me , I disabled the text by using the "hud_saytext 0" and "hud_deathnotice_time 1" and now I have 60 fps :D . hope this helps some fellas with sh**** Intel cards xD
Just wanted to share this with ya :D but one question, why does it boost fps when I disable text ?? and of course the hud stuff only disables text and that doesn't help out if the server have some messages to display like the "server list" or a flashing "player's crosshair stayed too long on (1)player's head. gosh fps goes to 15 :(
any way to disable these too??

Possible thing is, you probobly replaced the file itselfs.
What you were supposed to do, was copy opengl.dll to your gldrv folder, open drvmap.txt and change the text there, what I guess you did is you cutted your files instead and that causes your Counterstrike to have loading errors.
You can try setting it back, however re-installation may be needed.
That's why I appealed on that step it's very vital to follow those steps closely.
Also if you pasted opengl32.dll instead of opengl.dll into your gldrv directory, make sure you used the code for gldrv/opengl32.dll

i have 600 fps in the deathrun server.
when using the latest drivers from ATI (driver.dll in the correct folder) i can get 1700FPS easy.
however i start lagging when im on 650 FPS, so that means the servers are around 600~700 FPS.
WTB = 400 FPS cuz above that i lagg.
anyway i got banned in WTB for Slomohacking, well tell me would 600fps be Slomohacking? because above 500FPS you go very slow :P. and 1700FPS, well you dont move at all.

Increasing fps in LoL won't influence your game anyways ehh..
I mean yeah, I could probobly go ahead and google it, but by honestly, dunno about LoL and not many people are bothered to find it out, to the fact as I said, it's not really needed in a game like Dota / HoN / LoL etc

No clue why your acess should be denied. Try to check if you're user on your computer with full permission to edit files.
Also try to Run as Administrator to open it.
Last option that comes up in my mind - It could be a virus blocking permissions.

If you're able to pump up your fps to 400 max there's nothing much to be done (maybe searching for configs with exceptional fps performance and updating all your gphx drivers).
Also buying better pc gear (video card, monitor, pc etc) would improve it.
Dunno really any other way to improve it, because in the tutorial I wrote i included every little trick I knew to reach the maximal fps possible.

when i open CS my fps are 100
if i open Options, my fps go to 80
when i open Server, my fps go 40......

try this commands
gl_max_size 16 or 32 => this will turn your texture dramatically bad and it will be blurry
EDIT : AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD , do not always set your fps to 100 , only set it to 100 if your PC is ABLE to generate 100 fps , lock it to 60-70 if your pc is bad then always do cl_cmdrate +5 above from your fps like cl_cmdrate 65-75-80 in this case
+ I saw in servers that sv_maxupdaterate is 30 , so that's why I get a lot of choke when setting cl_updaterate to 101-100-90 , so maybe if you set it to 30 you will get far less choke thus less lag , this is just a theory though !

Actually you can set your fps to anything you like.
It will allow game to reach that limit, although if it's not able to it simply will not, will keep freezed at that 84 and will not try to go over since it can't. So no it doesn't really matter what you set your max_fps to.

I just saw this topic yesterday, and I did all the steps, but it didn't work, untill the almighty legend Rawr helped me using teamviewer, at first I had 100 fps max, then darkness helped me and now I can have up to 400 fps :D

btw i got a problem with opengl
i got constant 100 fps when fps_max 101 but when i throw a he grenade or press the flashlight button it drops to 20-30
but when i use d3d , i got no problem
i heard that opengl is a bit buggy since cs 1.6 is an old game !

i got an intel hd graphics 3000 ( i know i know an intel chipset xD ) but still i can play team fortress 2 on 100-200 fps and crusader kings 2 on 15-30 fps which is a 2012 game

Well it works perfectly fine for me. Mght be old monitor or fan overheating if not those first two optiions. Otherwise I don't get why it should drop so rapidly.

There is a program called gamebooster it helps you to get more FPS .
but i got a Question my normal FPS is between 250-350 can i get more , if there is a way to have more can you told me please ?

I DID ALL WITH CONFIGS, WITH COMMANDS........I CLOSE MY ANTIVIR AND MY ANTISPYWARE.......
i deleted some lines..... please HELP... my fps are good untill i open my servers, and they go down to 40 fps.....or less even.....

guys you can do this command :
hud_draw 0 it give more FPS ( but you cant see chat )
hud_draw 1 ( to show up the chat again )
There is a program called gamebooster it helps you to get more FPS .
but i got a Question my normal FPS is between 250-350 can i get more , if there is a way to have more can you told me please ?

I just bought new PC with high Performance.
CPU = Intel 3210GHz Core i3 8MB Caches.
Ram = 4GB DDR3
Graphic Card Size : 1.5GB DDR3
But i have FPS Drop , In the mine menu , it will be about 1100 FPS , But in game 60 ~ 30 .
When i look down at the floor , my FPS will increase to 110 , but when i rush and look in the middle , i'll get FPS drop to 60 ~ 30

Fps drops are natural but those are little bit too much.
Might be that you may have bought new gear but monitor is not fast enough for performance, or you're running game on high quality / resolution.
@EsaT. There's nothing you can mess up with this tutorial [unless you've messed up the opengl32.dll / drvmap.txt part]

check if your processor or gfx card are way hot , it may cause it sometimes
try other games and check if the same happens

Things should get little bit more pixelate for better perofrmance but definately not blurry. Try getting other config or you did something wrong in your graphic settings (Also possibly old pc / video card not catching up with opengl windows performance.)

Well I should have probobly re-edited the guide also for Win7 users. Might do it in future. About graphics, it should swap automatically once you re-do the drvmap.txt file but if not just run it on opengl mode.

I don't get the question as this is not related to fps.
Talking about speed, server has either other sv_airacceleration or you simply fail your strafes / bhop / longjump etc.

You DID SOMETHING WRONG. That's why it didn't help. Also graphics shouldn't be bad that means you've surely messed up something and didn't follow my tutorial close enough. Tut isn't bad, something what you done was :P

Like Rawrplus said, those commands saves in "config.cfg". In your case commands are not saved bc u have "config.cfg" as "Read Only".
1. Go to : C,D or E:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\YOURNINCNAMESTEAM\counter-strike\cstrike -> right click on "config.cfg" , then Properties, then uncheck the box "as read-only.
2. Open cs game, open console , put your commands, exit the game.
3. Follow the procedure nr.1 , and recheck the box "read-only"

I doubt any. I think it's more of texture bug than thing caused by this. Try deleting the map from your cstrike folder. If that doesn't help make sure your game is set to OpenGL and not to d3d

Hi, just followed the tutorial because I was stucked on 60 fps in CS 1.6 and could get around 800 fps in CS:S, so that's strange lol (using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750). After completing the tutorial I now have 100.5 fps even if I set fps_max to more than 200 :o
